Why would they be angry? Do they not want to schedule BYU? Do they really think Utah deserves a 2 for 1 with BYU?Originally posted by USUC View PostMy Utah fan brethren at work are having a collective meltdown. So much anger.

I'm not sure I understand why Utes would be upset at renewing the series...

I can only speak for my co-workers, but they think that this strengthens BYU but only hurts Utah. They want Utah to completely separate themselves from BYU, the midmajor. Its a zero sum game to them.Originally posted by BigFatMeanie View PostWhy would they be angry? Do they not want to schedule BYU? Do they really think Utah deserves a 2 for 1 with BYU?

Isn't this the narrative that Hill was sharing when the gap in playing first showed up? Utah now has other priorities. They have a conference race to worry about that BYU doesn't have. They have big teams and big plans and potentially a conference championship game, etc.Originally posted by USUC View PostI can only speak for my co-workers, but they think that this strengthens BYU but only hurts Utah. I think many of the hard core fans (the kind who spend a lot of time on messageboards) may have bought into that line of thinking.
But I think the majority of fans (you know - the "regular" folks who wear the gear and watch some games on TV, but don't know the names of players and don't really pay attention during the off season) that I've talked to would prefer that BYU and Utah continue playing. The hard core BYU haters are less likely to be in this group.

Great news about the Utah game..
Also, apparently Hill says that BYU has a series scheduled with Stanford?
"Mike Sorensen @sorny8 2h
Hill also said late-season games with BYU won't be regular because of BYU-USC series and BYU-Stanford series beginning in 2020."

I'm guessing the Stanford arrangement will be similar to USC. Notre Dame traditionally plays either USC or Stanford on Thanksgiving weekend. This leaves a hole in the PAC-10 regular season schedule late in the season. Thus, I'm guessing that on the week one team is playing Notre Dame, BYU will play the other team. Or something like that - it's just a guess.
I hate 2for1s as well; however, doing it in order to add quality games in late November make is a bit more palatable.

I've seen nothing but rumor that the Stanford is a 2-1. I'll assume it is true and say that these two for ones are unsustainable unless BYU is prepared to start offering cash games to MWC teams. Having to sit through a bunch of twofers with Idaho and eastern Washington doesn't cut make up or one good home game in November every other year.

If we've arrived at giving a 2/1 to Stanford as well, then I just don't see how we're going to get enough quality games at home. TH can't keep doing this to the fans who are paying for season tickets. I'll just pass on season tickets and attend a game out of state. We bought a lot of tickets this year. We won't do so if the schedule deteriorates at home like it ultimately will if we keep giving a 2/1 and 1 and done to everyone.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI am not surprised it is probably a 2 for 1. I heard Stanford is 1-1-1. Neutral most likely at At&t park. I guess the Niners stadium will be done that is also a possible site.

Hasn't Stanford been one of the best teams in the nation recently? As an out-of-state fan, 1-1s, 2-1s, 1-1-1s don't really make much difference if the games are on national TV. I like the higher SoS even if it means 2-1/1-1-1s. In the long run, does it cost more to have the NCAA minimum home games and stronger opponents away/neutral vs weaker overall competition with more home games? I'm on the side of stronger SoS and more games on national TV at away/neutral sites at the expense of home games.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI am not surprised it is probably a 2 for 1. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

I got into a conversation with a Ute fan here in the office yesterday. He was asking my feelings about the 2 for 1's because his two devoted BYU brothers were talking about it with him. They were telling him they just don't see how scheduling at home games will be good on a consistent basis. We might get a home schedule like the one coming up once every 3-4 years with the other years looking average to bad.
Overall as far as money goes, exposure, BYUTV, BYU control, the Independence thing is probably dang good. For the ticket buying fan who goes to see good competition, it sucks.
They expressed the same plan I have. Buy tickets in the good year and skip the bad ones as far as home scheduling goes. You will still have over 50,000, maybe 60,000 in the bad years.
The problem is long term. Over the next 20 years you will lose a lot of the "avid" local fans. They will become TV fans just like the majority of fans outside of the state of Utah are. I probably won't be around to see it, but if, and it is a huge if, Utah ends up in the upper echelon of the PAC12, 20 years from now BYU will not only be little brother, we will be "baby" brother.
