In some aspects, there's not a whole lot of daylight between "Utah trying to reinvent itself" and "Utah trying to marginalize its in-state competition."

Which makes it even more plausible, IMHO.
My opinion, and that's all it is, is that doing that is not the goal. It is probably acknowledged as one possible(if unlikely) consequence of the decision, however.

(Also, the U.'s not reinventing itself, it's a university on the rise and is trying to move to the next level. I think most universities try to do that.)

Oh, yes. Utah is trying to move to the next level. That obviously means there is no way that they could play BYU! Absolutely not! I mean, moving to the PAC 12 wasn't good enough. Utah has to not schedule BYU to reach the next level!!!!

I guess it's time for me to 'fess up. I am trying to obfuscate the real truth here, which is that Dave Pershing and Chris Hill hate BYU passionately and see the PAC-12 membership as the best opportunity they'll ever have to do serious damage to BYU. As long-time University of Utah leaders who are near the end of their highly-respected and achievement-rich careers, that's the final legacy they want to leave. They've also convinced the U's Board of Trustees to go along. It all just makes so much sense. That's why it's so hard for me to offer a convincing alternative view.

Well, your alternate view made so much sense. Of course making the step to the next level requires dumping BYU! It's the only way!

Don't you have somewhere else you need to be? Surely there are events going on in Dayton that you must attend?

I thought his involvement was simply assumed.

                          I guess I don't see the difference.

Edit: Your icon. Still creepy. When I watched a couple of episodes of the show, that guy was the guy I liked best. But in a photo, his mug looks like he's contemplating ritual pederasty or something.

I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

You're talking to a lawyer. We parse words for a living. (By the way, what do you mean by "difference?" )

It's so odd how you attach feelings and emotions like hate to this.

It's business. You have a chance to act in a way that gives you an advantage over your closest competitor, you take that action every time. There's no hatred involved.
