IIRC there are twice as many games in South Bend as in Provo, typical 2:1, which is to be expected with ND. No reason they can't play consecutive away games since its a longer series.

Take a look at 2013 and then tell me it is not working out.

Home games agains Texas, Boise State, and Georgia tech. Road games at Notre Dame, Houston, and Hawaii.
If 2014 and 2015 get some good teams at home, we can all agree. However, having one good year is not indicative of success.

      • looking at past schedules for Texas, they did have a couple of years recently where they played OOC games in November (home games). Texas coming to LES in November could be a nice advantage for the Y, and would open up the schedule for September to fit Utah or other teams in.

I think BITF is right. It's no longer the 2012 opener, but it's still on the 2012 schedule. That's my latest understanding, anyway.

I don't think that is what junkie intended. He thought I was referencing quality games with non-Utah teams, non-traditional opponents. Junkie is a good egg; 3D is malevolent. He stirs up a great deal of controversy here for sport. IGNORE HIM.

Come on, SU. You know how scheduling works (I hope). Any program that tries to build a full schedule with only one year time to do it is going to have to fill it with the NMSUs and Idahos of the world. That would be just as true if Texas found themselves independent next year.

As Cougjunkie correctly noted, the real test is how does BYU do in scheduling down the road. It's possible we will never find out, but I certainly think BYU's schedule is more interesting than the Utes going forward.

2013 home games: Texas, Georgia Tech, Boise State, Utah
2013 away games: USU, Houston, Notre Dame, Washington State, Hawaii

2014 home: Houston, USU, Southern Miss, Notre Dame, Hawaii
2014 away: Texas, Georgia Tech, Boise State, Central Florida, Utah

                        2015 home: Boise, Utah, USU
2015 away: Southern Miss, Notre Dame, Hawaii

Utah 2013: USU, BYU, AZ, ASU, CU, UCLA, USC, Stanford, Oregon, OSU, Wash
                        Utah 2014: Same

Utah 2015: Same, but swap Stanford for Cal and Washington for WSU.

The trouble with a conference is that you find yourself playing the same teams year after year after year. That gets old for fans. There are benefits to being in a conference, but scheduling isn't necessarily one of them. At least as an independent, the teams you play multiple times are the ones you actively seek to play.

This is why I find it puzzling that conferences seem to be headed in the direction of 9 conference games. I really like to see good matchups outside the norm.

IMO, 9-game conference schedules will not come at the expense of quality OOC games for most programs. Instead of a one-and-done "buy" home game, a team will have a better quality conference game.

Expanding to 9-game conference schedule is a direct result of teams charging more to travel to a "name" program to get beat and then bring home a paycheck. So rather than pay the additional costs, many programs are scheduling div II programs.

Now this may not be the case for all schools but it will be for Nebraska - a program I'm familar with. When the Big Ten goes to a 9-game conference schedule it will be Nebraska-Purdue instead of Nebraska-South Dakota St. Which is the better game?

I'll also say that Nebraska is not really in favor of this change while Purdue most likely is. And the reason is because Nebraska is greedy. Rather than pay the increased payouts for a MWC or Conf-USA OOC game, Nebraska will schedule a div II team. They get away with it because they can keep a 7-game home schedule and sell out Memorial Stadium when South Dakota St. comes to play. Purdue does not fare as well when they schedule a div II team for a one-and-done home game. Purdue would rather have another Big Ten team like Nebraska at home every other year.

The Big Ten likes the extra conference game because they have a better product to market to the networks. There will be six additional games - one more week of Big Ten football - controlled by the conference.

If 9-game conference schedules resulted in trading Nebraska-UCLA for Nebraska-Purdue - I would object. But I'm fairly confident that the trade will be Nebraska-South Dakota St. for Nebraska-Purdue and that will be better for college football.
