I don't see how conference realignment would encourage making the schedule more difficult - which is all adding a ninth conference game does.

    • I was reviewing the schedule this year and saw that BYU was going to be on ESPN 7 times with the possibility of one more (Oregon State) if the 2 teams are doing well..

      I am SOOO STOKED!!!!

Actually more. So far the only games not televised on ESPN are Idaho State and Oregon State IIRC from media day.

And I presume they will also be on BYUTV later that evening correct??

It's a bogus hypothetical, but even if it does happen, do you really believe the human polls would let an SEC team (assuming their SOS is in the top-15) fall short of the title game compared to a Big East team (assuming their SOS is 50+)? And how would a 9-game conference schedule be different from the current 8-game conference schedule in terms of "divisive controversy over schedule strength that could never be objectively schedule"?

Yes. All games will be later re-broadcast. The Idaho State game will air live. Oregon State is still TBD.

Is there a emoticon that does flips etc.. That is what I am feeling. Having spent most of my time outside of the area that can view BYU Games I am beyond stoked to once again be able to view the games either by ESPN or later that evening on BYUTV..

I will say this about the independent thing. People outside of Utah are going to get great coverage. byu is really bringing its product to those alumni outside of the intermountain region. That being said if you are a utah county byu fan its not better than it was and in some ways worse.

The last 3 home games are terrible. There is no game on Thanksgiving weekend. No rivalry game to look forward to in November. Not to mention 3 friday night games (two at home). I fully acknowledge that the schedule in 2011 was bumpy due to not enough time but the home schedule for 2012 doesnt look any better (I thought you were playing texas at home in 2012?). 2013 will have 3 maybe 4 (If Utah gets scheduled) marquee games but then you go back to having the same problem the two years following.

Will the schedule pattern be 2 crappy home games years for one really good home game years? Will the demand still be high enough for the crappy games? One would think byu makes the most money from their ticket sales.

We have the Hawaii game in the first week of December though. I believe that when Sports Illustrated asked Hawaii fans who there biggest rival was the overwhelming answer was BYU. I know I'm looking forward to watching that game on ESPN 2 in HD. Have a feeling quite a few people around the nation will be watching too.

This is a problem Utah has right now as well. It will take several years to develop a meaningful rivalry for the Utes. I don't think anyone buys that Colorado will become Utah's immediate rival.

BYU could, hypothetically, develop a good rivalry with some team over that same time span (next 3-5 years) and decide to schedule that team every year.

Same for me. I like that we're rekindling the BYU/Hawaii series.

Ideally, I'd like to see BYU in a full Big 12, playing:

                        9 Big 12 games
                        Utah
                        Utah State
                        Hawaii
One big non-conference team (Notre Dame, etc)
*** Every other year use the Hawaii game exception to play a "special" game i.e. TCU at JerryWorld, Penn State at FedEx Field, etc.

Nobody that has an understanding of football will recognize CU as a rival right now. Utah will be playing relevant teams in November though.

                            No doubt about that.

This is nothing different from BYU's schedules in the MWC. Look at last year's home schedule:

                              Washington
                              Nevada
                              SDSU
                              Wyoming
                              New Mexico
                              UNLV
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
