I'll only add that BYU was probably given serious consideration for Big 12 inclusion after Colorado and Nebraska bailed from the conference. However, there was a lot of instability regarding the Big 12 when Texas and OU begain flirting with the PAC-12. During that time, independence for BYU was looking good and perhaps a better option than a Big 12 comprised of Iowa St., Kansas, Kansas St., Baylor, Texas Tech, Missouri, and Oklahoma St (Texas A&M would have either followed Texas and OU to the PAC-12 or joined the SEC). Understandably, BYU hestitated during this small window as wapiti stated.Originally posted by wapiti View PostMy own reconciliation of public information and speculation lead me to believe that the following happened:
1) BYU liked the initial phase of independence. The ESPN deal, positive media reaction, BYUtv, and some good early scheduling wins made the admin think the course was viable.
2) The Big 12 started to fall apart and desperately reached out to BYU.
3a) BYU slow-played its position to see whether Texas or OU would put a death knell in the conference by running to the PAC or SEC.
3b) While BYU was considered, there was internal opposition to BYU in the Big 12, specifically from OSU and T Boone Pickens. When BYU balked their supporters vanished and went reluctantly to TCU.
Rumors of BYU making demands or showing arrogance are neither here nor there. I think we did nothing more than hesitate and the opportunity passed us by. Sadly, that small window in the early days of independence is the only time in the last 20 years where BYU would have hesitated at the opportunity to join the Big 12.
Maybe in 10 years or so Holmoe will be gone from BYU and we'll get the real story.
With the second round of defections from the Big 12 with Texas A&M and Missouri, I don't think BYU was considered as seriously. Adding TCU to the Big 12 was somewhat automatic since UT wanted four teams from Texas so it could continue its control and influence over the conference. Initially, I was surprised with the inclusion of West Virginia rather than BYU but WV was not a bad addition. I don't think T Boone Pickens and Okie St. has much sway in Big 12 matters. Okie St. tags along behind OU who in turn follows UT's lead. Also, I think the Sunday play excuse is nothing more than a red herring.
I've stated before that I think the one thing that might finally get BYU invited to the Big 12 would be the requirement of a CCG to get an auto invite to the playoffs. A scenario where a 1-loss SEC, PAC-12, B1G, or ACC team (with that loss being in a CCG) gets a play-off invitation at the expense of a 1-loss Big 12 team and/or a 1-loss Notre Dame. Then, maybe, BYU and Notre Dame join the Big 12 for football only.โNot the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.โ

I believe "Sunday play" is code for BYU is perceived to be a pain in the ass to work with. Think of BYU as the Ted Cruz with the republican establishment.
I think Utah took a real "yes sir, thank you sir" attitude to get into the PAC12. Why would we take that attitude? We could go Independent and we are regarded as the ND of the West.
Big time programs were knocking down our doors to try and schedule us. I think we have two home games coming up with ND don't we?

That would be so much better than any conference BYU has ever been associated with, it just befuddles me that they didn't work to try to stabilize it.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI'll only add that BYU was probably given serious consideration for Big 12 inclusion after Colorado and Nebraska bailed from the conference. I also think ND is pretty happy in the ACC right now. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.
