Yes. We were just waiting for the Lord to make up the difference but he didn't follow through.
What a jerk.

Do you mean to say that BYU turned its nose up at the B-12 in 2011?
The prevailing cb rumor is that it was that dastardly BYU Advancement VP. No not Fred Skousen but current BYU prez Kevin Worthen. I wonder how long the new VP (former religion professor Matt Richardson) will take to become the bad guy holding the athletic department back. Maybe the religion guy will be better than the business and law guy.

Was this ever important enough that it could have gone before the first presidency.

Really? President Worthen stopped the Big-12 from happening? Has he made any statement on his commitment to BYU Athletics since he came on? Bronco has been on record as saying he wants to go to the Big-12. If there was an internal effort to stop the Big-12 from happening, why would Bronco feel comfortable speaking public about wanting something the administration doesn't? Maybe Bronco is tanking this season to make the powers that be realize the error of their ways.

Dude, come on. It's a CB rumor.

cb rumor. I have no idea what happened or didn't happen. I'm just amused that there always is a BYU advancement VP fans can revile for holding the program back or meddling in AD affairs.

My own reconciliation of public information and speculation lead me to believe that the following happened:
1) BYU liked the initial phase of independence. The ESPN deal, positive media reaction, BYUtv, and some good early scheduling wins made the admin think the course was viable.
2) The Big 12 started to fall apart and desperately reached out to BYU.
3a) BYU slow-played its position to see whether Texas or OU would put a death knell in the conference by running to the PAC or SEC.
3b) While BYU was considered, there was internal opposition to BYU in the Big 12, specifically from OSU and T Boone Pickens. When BYU balked their supporters vanished and went reluctantly to TCU.
Rumors of BYU making demands or showing arrogance are neither here nor there. I think we did nothing more than hesitate and the opportunity passed us by. Sadly, that small window in the early days of independence is the only time in the last 20 years where BYU would have hesitated at the opportunity to join the Big 12.
Maybe in 10 years or so Holmoe will be gone from BYU and we'll get the real story.

Bronco has explicitly said that Sunday play was the main issue that prevented us from getting into the Big 12: link.
