  • Does Boise State deserve to play for the BCS title this year?

My experience with BSU fans outside of message boards has been limited, but the general consensus I've gotten from them is that they are just as deserving as any other FBS program to contend for the National Championship. I've always thought this to be slightly delusional.

I saw the following article posted on Utefans:

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...is-right-thing

I generally think that the writer is a grade-a asshat, but I'd be lying if the article didn't get me thinking about Boise's legitimacy. Why does Boise get to be the exception out of all the other non-aq schools that have gone undefeated?

    Here's their 2010 schedule:

Virginia Tech (at Fed Ex Field)

    Wyoming (at Laramie, WY)

    Oregon State (Bronco Stadium)

New Mexico State (at Las Cruces, NM)

    Toledo (Bronco Stadium)

San Jose State (at San Jose, CA)

    Louisiana Tech (Bronco Stadium)

    Hawai'i (Bronco Stadium)

    Idaho (at Moscow, ID)

    Fresno State (Bronco Stadium)

    Nevada (at Reno, NV)

    Utah State (Bronco Stadium)

Aside from VT and OSU, they'll most likely coast.

It's common knowledge that Boise's schedule is primarily made up of cream puffs. In recent years, this has prevented other undefeated teams from playing in the MNC game.

If they run the table this year, does Boise State deserve to play in the Title Game next January?

Wouldn't this depend primarily on how other contenders did? Also, won't that BSC formula spit out the two teams that will play for the title? So, if BSU gets spat out, then I guess they deserve to be in the game.

I will say this much; going undefeated two seasons in a row with wins over TCU, VTech, OSU, etc. would be quite impressive.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

They're no less deserving than the other teams currently occupying the top 10.

Of course, it all depends on how things shake out over the next three months.

It really is quite simple. The objective of a football game is to win. As long as you win your games, you should be able to continue to play, until only one team is left standing. The national champion.

Who gives a rat's ass who Gregg Doyel, or you, or I, think should play for the National Championship? It isn't a popularity contest, or a beauty contest, or an election. Settle it on the field. Last team standing. It isn't really that hard, is it?

At least, that is the way it should be.

But, of course, they don't do that in college football - at least FBS. Instead, a few sports fan and computer geeks get together and guess who are the best two teams in the land, and those two teams get to play for the national championship.

Yep. Depends on how others do. If everyone else has 2 losses, then of course.
I would take most other undefeated BCS teams before them though.

They will have gone two years without a loss and beaten some good teams on their run. I say give them a shot. Two seasons going back to back undefeated is pretty incredible.

This plus the fact that they did all they could to schedule OOC games this year. Road game against VaTech and upper tier P10 team, they left the WAC showing that they understand their conference sucks and want to get better.

I am not a BSU fan, but they are doing everything they can to get better.

I support this post. As a BSU fan I am extremely happy the direction this team is headed. My worry is if we win tonight, too many people will overlook some worthy opponents. OSU and Utah State come to mind real quick. It will be a fun ride and it all starts tonight! Time to get on the road so I can be home in time to watch the game!

The computers will never allow BSU to play for the fake championship.

                    This.

What else could they have done? They went on the road (ok, technically, a neutral site, but not really) to face a top ten Va Tech and scheduled as many quality opponents as would pick up the phone. They win their games. If they don't get a shot, then you basically say that nothing they do is good enough.

We're obviously counting chickens before they hatch, since they've not won a single game this year yet, but you get the point.

But the AP poll carries the same amount of relevance, IMO. If the AP poll could jump Utah to No. 2 after beating Alabama, there's no reason BSU could be ranked No. 1 at season's end, with the voters knowing full well that BSU has accomplished enough over the past 2-3 years to warrant such a ranking.

I have no problem with split national champions, seeing that's often been the case over the last 100 years or so.

You make a fair point that split national champs is possible. My comment is more about my dislike/distrust of the BCS.

I have to grudgingly admit that this post is sensible. In all of college football, there is no team that I hate quite so much as Boise State. I include Utah in that statement. May they forever be cursed with leprosy so long as their field remains blue.

But I have to say, it's not their fault that their conference is made up of the Wednesday's Children of yesteryear. I laugh lustily that their new conference isn't a whole lot better, now that we've all given the MWC a fervent double-bird of righteousness.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

My hate for them isn't rational. I don't even know why I loath them. The blue field? The fans? Their stupid mascot? The beat down from '03? Am I just jealous? I don't think so. I do know there is no other team I don't want in a national title game more than BSU and that includes Utah.

                              I can't explain, it's just how I feel.
