The receivers have been a disappointment through fall camp and now into the first game. I made a crack earlier in the thread about watching HS kids come up a more of Heaps' throws than our guys, but I'm sitting here wondering if his receivers in HS were not in fact better than our guys.Originally posted by tooblue View PostTo be honest the receivers were disappointing, especially Ashworth, but Jacobson had a bad drop and did Chambers do anything other than run back kicks and flip people off?
When Heaps was a Jr. Skyline's #1 receiver was Sr. Geno Simone and #2 was Kasen Williams. Last year Simone started just about every game as a true freshman at WSU and was second on the team in receptions and total yards. When Heaps was a Sr. Kasen was his #1 target and becoming one of the best receivers on the West Coast, and his #2 was Simone's little brother, who was also a nice looking player.
So far, Simone/Williams > Jacobsen/Chambers.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Did you miss the drop by Richard Wilson in the endzone?Originally posted by tooblue View PostBecause they did sputter and failed to get in the end zone.

The tight ends were a surprise and maybe it was mostly play calling but Heaps was shooting at deer and Nelson got it done. What a blessing to have a kid of Nelson's caliber to bring the frosh along slowly.*Banned*

It's called shoot'n deer. He didn't so much drop it as it went right through him like a steel tipped bullet.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostDid you miss the drop by Richard Wilson in the endzone?
Last night, though titillated by the skills of the young freshman, I was much more at ease with Nelson pulling the trigger as were you and every other cougar fan that is honest with him/herself. Maybe in a few weeks that will change but right now this teams best option is the two QB system.Last edited by tooblue; 09-05-2010, 04:15 PM.

BYU can't change it's personnel. The kid will have to stop shoot'n deer and learn a little touch. In the mean time, play the athlete who can keep teams honest and might just be a gamer. Maybe that's what the head coach was thinking when he named Nelson the starter and switched every series. And that would be why he's the head coach.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostThe receivers have been a disappointment through fall camp and now into the first game. There were a couple passes where I thought he put a little too much on them. The rest just made me think it was kind of pathetic D1 receivers couldn't come up with them, especially with a group that has been touted as being among the deepest and most talented WR corp we've ever had.Originally posted by tooblue View PostBYU can't change it's personnel. I was disappointed in the Jacobson drop that along with the Ashworth drop killed a drive. Now granted, neither ball was accurately thrown but those are catches that need to be made.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostThere were a couple passes where I thought he put a little too much on them. I am being honesty with myself, and I didn't feel more at ease with Nelson. Neither QB made me feel terribly comfortable, and each had me on edge quite a bit.Originally posted by tooblue View PostLast night, though titillated by the skills of the young freshman, I was much more at ease with Nelson pulling the trigger as were you and every other cougar fan that is honest with him/herself. Regarding the drops from the wideouts, I think a lot of that has to do with the changing of qbs every series. With how much WR depth BYU has they might be better off going with Hoffman, Jacobsen and say Wilson with Heaps. Then Chambers, Ashworth and Muehlman with Nelson. So that they can get comfortable with one quarterback. The switching has to be hard on the receivers since both qbs throw such a drastically different ball.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostI am being honesty with myself, and I didn't feel more at ease with Nelson. That's not a bad idea, though I think Chambers would rather play with Heaps.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostRegarding the drops from the wideouts, I think a lot of that has to do with the changing of qbs every series. And before that with Curtis Brown and Fui V. We've had an abnormally nice run of Cougar running backs this past several years.Originally posted by tooblue View PostThe RB's by committee are serviceable. We have been spoiled the last couple of seasons with Unga and Tonga etc. Welcome back to reality.

They were bad in the first half and they were great in the second half. For me, that adds up to average.Originally posted by Surfah View PostDonuthole still thinks they were just average.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

One thing that hasn't been talked about much is halftime adjustments. The 2nd half was a completely different game on both sides of the ball. Kudos to the coaching staff. Clearly they saw some things and made the right adjustments."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

I saw a replay of the 4th and 2 play which ended with Logan breaking up the end zone pass. If you are a defensive-minded spectator, that was a beauty. We had a linebacker chasing down Locker and tight coverage on both the mid-range and deep passes. As much criticism as Sarkesian gets for that play call, I have a hard time arguing with it. He put the ball in the hands of one of the fastest players on the field and two other options just in case that didn't work out. It wasn't his fault that it was PERFECTLY defended.
Loved it. Just loved it.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν
