  • C'mon Ute Fans ... Stop Sucking

Little known fact about me. I'm a graduate of the U. I went to law school at the SJ Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah. That didn't change my primary team but it changed who I gave second billing to. I went to all of the U of U home football games during the storied 2004 season. I stood in the stands on my student ID ticket and sang Utah Man (although I only knew a few of the words). I even got my first law firm out of school to pony up annual 4 figure donations to the U athletic department.

Now that you all know my dirty secret, I think I can criticize my fellow Utes without it being put down to rivalry smack. Last night I was over at the Gateway picking up sushi at the crappy sushi place when I spied a pair of guys in Pitt colors. As I got closer to them I realized they were wearing Pitt gear. Ever the appropriate host, I asked if they were in town for the game and warned them how tough it is to beat "us" up on the hill. They laughed and we exchanged small talk. I also directed them, at their request, to the SkyBox. As they were walking away, one of the guys turned to me and said, "You're not really a Utah fan, are you?"

I replied, "Of course I am."

They guy persisted, "I don't believe it." I then explained to him that I'm primarily a Cougar fan but I cheer for the Utes when they aren't playing BYU.

The other gentlemen had rejoined the conversation by this point and said, "That makes more sense. The Utah fans have been incredibly rude, unwelcoming, and classless and you were very polite and helpful. Figures you aren't really one of them."

The other guy chimed in, "Seriously, we have never had a reason to cheer for BYU in the past but after seeing what you guys have to deal with every year, we're BYU fans when they play Utah from now on."

I admonished them not to judge the program by a few bad fans and they both shook their heads. "This isn't about a few bad fans. This is about coming on a road trip and being heckled by assholes all day. You'd think we were at West Virginia or something."

We had a laugh and said goodbye. While I was driving home I thought about it and thought to myself that Utah fans, like BSU fans, need to start believing the Utes are as good as they actually are. The Rodney Dangerfield approach makes us look classless and insecure. Basically, stop sucking.

Where did you go to undergrad. If its Utah you deserved to be shot.

Didn't take these guys very long to get the Utah fanbase pegged.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I used to occasionally wear a Utah red shirt on campus at BYU and I got a few light comments, but that was it. Nobody was ever rude that I can recall.

Nowadays, I wear my BYU hat around town in Davis county and get heckled and annoyed by Utes. Even little Utes. What are you guys teaching your children?

Or have his opinion taken seriously on broad brush statements of Utah fans.

We all have our share of assholes. Heaven knows I'll get plenty of agreement on that one -- although I have witnesses that I am a very genial, friendly host to fans of all teams at RES, even BYU fans. I save my tough talk for message boards.

99% of my interaction with Ute fans when wearing BYU gear is good natured.

I'm sad to report that I never used any of my free student tickets during either the 2003 or 2004 seasons while I was at the U. I did watch every single game though, and cheered the Utes on both seasons. I chose to abstain during the rivalry games though.

I believe it isn't the serious fans that are the problem. I think it is the fans who joined on for the counter-culture crap in the 80s and 90s and the fans who are bandwagoning. That said, when the fan base starts to act like they expect to win, they won't be as obnoxious. See BSU fans and BYU fans of the early and late 80s for illustration.

Not having ventured over to Uf.n, I've enjoyed the Ute fans I've come to interact with.

Before I became a regular on this site, I would have said that I prefer Ute fans to BYU fans based on CB.

Killer, you're too smart to really believe what you're posting. Even so, the first time you are within 5 feet of me I am pouring Diet Coke on your head. You've been warned.

Last year I was in a restaurant in Provo. Some guys decked out in Florida State gear were sitting at a table. I moseyed over to chat about the upcoming game they had against BYU. After some chit chat they said you can’t be a BYU fan. I assured them that I (magnanimously) did cheer for BYU as long as they weren’t playing Utah. Their eyes lit up and they nodded together saying “we knew you weren’t a BYU fan.”

When I asked how they knew, they explained that they felt that they had been shunned and made to feel incredibly guilty for not being BYU fans. Apparently, some BYU fans had accurately pointed out some very hurtful shortcomings that they perceived the FSU fans to have.

We shared a cry together, and I helped them to know that even though they weren’t BYU fans, life was still worth living.
