I imagine there was a period between 1972 and 1996 when that joke didn't make any sense.

            Maybe not about football.

A friend of mine just moved to Columbus this summer. He's been a BYU fan since birth, graduated from BYU, as did all of his family. He told me yesterday that its hard to NOT be a Ohio State fan, living in Columbus, because its such a big deal there. He's got no connection whatsoever to OSU, other than the fact he moved there 2 months ago.

In other words, its much easier to be a bandwagon fan of Texas and Alabaman than it is of Wyoming.
              Thank you. You get it.

Living in Kansas, you see the same phenomenon with KU hoops. Tons of fans with little direct connection to the school.

People mistook what I said as passion and enthusiasm for the team. Given what this thread started out as, ie, "fans" of schools behaving badly toward fans of a visiting team, it should have been an easy distinction to make. Alums of the school are a little more concerned with how they represent their school to others than T-shirt fans might be, who only care about what happens on the field.

As someone who spent six years in PA, I can say that Pitt fans are pretty insufferable. Huge inferiority complex because of Penn State and the Steelers. Pitt sometimes gets mentioned on the news. Sometimes.

But that doesn't stop Pitt folks from feeling like they went to an elite private school and wanting everyone to acknowledge their relevance. Gimme a break. You didn't even go to the best private school in Pittsburgh.

I hope the Utes roll them.

Pitt is a private school? I always assume if its got the name of the city/state, its public.

Nope. Speaking from my hometown, the University of Rochester is most decidely private, and not part of the SUNY system. So is Syracuse University.
