No love for ASU here, but Houston backing into the championship game without playing any of the top 4 or 5 teams in the conference is a realistic possibility. Hopefully they can do us all a favor and drop one soon.

If they end with one conference loss, Houston loses almost all tiebreakers with other one loss teams due to the extremely poor aggregate record of their conference opponents. Pretty much the only way they get in is if they are one of only two teams that finish with 0 or 1 conference losses. That is certainly possible but I think it's much more likely they end up in a tiebreaker they lose with BYU, Cincinnati, Tech, or all 3.

They probably get more of a ranking bump from a win over 11-1 Houston than from beating a 2-loss Texas Tech or Cincinnati again.

Perhaps. But my opinion is if BYU is able to make it to the Big 12 championship undefeated, the opponent won't matter. BYU would be in the CFP at that point. A win in the Big12 championship would get us a first roind game at LES and a loss would mean a first round game on the road, regardless of Big 12 championship game opponent. It is hard for me to imagine a scenario in which BYU would ever be given a top 4 CFP ranking and first round bye.

Also a 1 loss Houston vs an undefeated BYU would mean Cincinnati would have to lose one more game in addition to BYU because Cincy would own the tie breaker over Houston. I guess the best shot for a Cincy loss would be this week at RES.

Yes. Here are the teams that would need two losses before the committee would consider ranking them below an undefeated BYU: Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Ole Miss. Vanderbilt, and MAYBE Miami. So to get to #4, six of those teams would have to lose 1-2 more games and BYU would have to navigate the remainder of the season undefeated. Extremely unlikely.

So you're saying there's a chance!

Just BYU going undefeated is unlikely. In that situation, what's the best-case scenario for BYU? Wins against as many highly-ranked teams as possible.

Keep in mind that if BYU beats either Texas Tech or Cincinnati twice (regular season + championship game), that team will drop more in the rankings than if they only have one loss at the hands of BYU.

Even if beating an 11-1 Houston doesn't improve the ranking/seeding high enough to get a first round bye, it could improve the seeding enough to have a more favorable matchup against a weaker team.

Honestly, though, the public perception might be that beating a 10-2 Texas Tech in the title game would carry more cashet than beating an 11-1 Houston. For purposes of this discussion, it's unfortunate that the Red Raiders dropped that game to Arizona State.

That said, the calculus can change a lot in the more likely scenario of BYU not finishing unbeaten. In that case, it's much better for other top conference teams to drop games to ensure BYU gets a spot in the title game.

This is probably obvious, but my Big 12 fantasy is an Utah/BYU to win-out, and then a complete bloodbath for the rest of the top Big 12 teams such that the championship comes down to Holy War 2.0. An historic 2 Holy Wars in a single season. BYU gets an early chance to go up 4-0 in the rivalry, and Utah gets a chance at redemption. That would be awesome.

When Whitt retires, the holy war is going to be intolerable from lovefest you will see between Scalley and Sitake. Scalley and SItake might even kiss on the lips mid-field instead of shaking hands post-game.

BYU fans are going to have to reach DEEP to find a way to hate Scalley the way they hate Whitt. My guess is that they will train a camera on Scalley pregame at LES to catch him with his eyes open during the prayer, but the joke will be on BYU, because he will be kneeling with both knees and head fully bowed.

All that said, I think Scalley will be a breath of fresh air and a spark for change. I think he will do well, and I like the guy. I also like Sitake. It will take us back to Lavell/Mcbride levels of coach friendship, if you give a shit about that crap.

You are probably wrong. Most Ute fans hope that BYU loses the rest of their games this season. In fact, voicing this opinion probably puts me at significant personal risk of being sworn at by a fellow Ute fan or even shot by a BYU fan.
