  • Dust in the Wind: BYU vs. Kansas

Big 12 conference play is here!

After leaving the MWC following the 2010 season, BYU football wandered in the wilderness for a dozen years. Nothing lasts forever, though, and the Cougars take on the Jayhawks as conference opponents this Saturday in Lawrence.

This is not your father’s (or your) Kansas football team. Led by standout QB Jalon Daniels, they come into Saturday’s contest with a 3-0 record and a top 20 FBS ranking in both total offense and total defense.

BYU is also undefeated on the season after securing a hard-earned road win at Arkansas last week. The Cougar defense seems rejuvenated under new DC Jay Hill, and the offense continues to find its way toward consistency.

The oddsmakers have Kansas as a 9.5-point favorite at the moment. Will BYU be clicking their heels and wishing for home, or will they push Kansas to the point of know return? Let’s go, Cougars!

Tidbit: Aloha really meant goodbye. BYU and Kansas last played over three decades ago when they met in the 1992 Aloha Bowl. BYU and fourth-string QB Tom Young fell to Kansas 20-23. It’s the only time the two teams have played prior to this weekend.

      9.5 pts? Really?

      That seems like easy money.

It keeps growing. I thought it opened at 7?

Yeah, I think that is correct.

Kansas really struggled with winless Nevada. A team that got killed by Idaho. But who knows?

I'm feeling pretty good here. I wasn't last week, but after what we showed during Arkansas, I think we have a shot.

I don't like our chances, mainly because after an upset win is usually about when the team starts believing their own press. And I think I would feel better about this game if Kansas had gone in and just trucked Nevada.

My thoughts exactly. I remember the Oklahoma win at Jerry World (I was there and met Ty Detmer) and then we got tucked by FSU.

Difference -- we were favored to win vs. FSU. We are 9.5 pt. dogs in this one.

                  9.5 is blatant disrespect.

Tom Young was a bad QB.

9.5 underdog to a team that struggled with a team that got blown out by FCS Idaho seems absurd to me, especially when that spread disagrees so much with Sagarin and other computer rankings.

The bettors saw #116 in total offense going against #20 Kansas in total defense and hammered that -7 line at opening. I can't say I disagree with that take. There is a world where we can't contain Daniels and our offense continues to struggle and Kansas covers easily. Daniels is completing 75% of his passes and doesn't turn the ball over. But I think we have a good shot. The offense has shown slow but sustained improvement since the opening game adventure and we can create pressure up front on defense like we haven't been able to in a long time. My feeling is this is a coin flip game which would mean about Kansas -3 but I do understand why the line is where it is.

Sure, but national statistical rankings after 2 games are pretty flimsy, I think. And betting pointspreads at the beginning of the season are commonly way off from the actual result. So we'll see.

I dont think that was the same season. TCU hammered us after we beat OU.

                              FSU was the following year.
