It was a great hit 10 years ago. Now it's targeting at every level except the NCAA apparently. If we are serious about safety in football great hits shouldn't directly result in concussions that knock you out of the game.Originally posted by YOhio View PostI thought it was a great hit

People gripe about targeting calls, but if we want to preserve football as a national pastime, we have to be aggressive about this.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View Post

Granted, this is HS so not apples to apples, but my canned line to a coach who complains that I flagged something that is "just hard football": I know you and I played like that coach, but it's a different game now and if we want to save it you are going to have to teach your players to hit differently.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

I also tell them that if I don't flag that hit I will lose game assignments when reviewed. Thankfully there has been a noticeable drop in complaints over the last 3 years on those kinds of penalties.

Yeah, not sure why the NCAA allows a defender to hit a RB in the head or neck area on a tackle where other levels that is verboten. The replay clearly shows shoulder to the lower facemask area. Rules continue to get tweaked in the interest of player safety, but implementation is confusing.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View Post

And by the way, complaints about consistency are dumb."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

This is an interesting article that highlights some of the confusion. Consistency has to be a part of that, especially when two different refs see the same play differently. The powers that be need to get everyone on the same sheet as quickly as possible.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostAnd by the way, complaints about consistency are dumb.
That article is a month old and we've made progress.

Lol. Yeah, now that we have achieved perfect consistency for holding and pass interference calls, let’s turn our attention to targeting.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View Post

Anyone who expects consistency in life, specially on subjective things like this, is going to live a life of disappointment.

1. There wouldn't be nearly the angst there is about targeting in college if they would remove the automatic ejection and make it an ejection for flagrant cases only. Ejection and suspension for the next half for what is often times an accidental target is too high a penalty.
2. The NCAA rules on targeting literally say when there is doubt it is a penalty. This differs greatly from general guidance on other subjective penalties like PI where when there is doubt you should not throw the flag.
Given the above I understand the angst around the rule and the desire for more consistency but generally agree that hoping for true consistency is a waste of time.

Touche. I'm sure a huge part is educating people like our good friend Omaha does when he's calling a game.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post
