I am? Please educate us on how BYU was poor at run blocking last year. And how TA compensated for that.

For the record, in TA's last year, BYU's O-line was the only one in the country to grade 90+ in both pass protection and run blocking.

    • Well just to weigh in here... that game was hard to watch. I like the upstart terrible team we are playing to get some good plays in but then I like to see us overwhelm them in the trenches. I'm still waiting for that to happen. If I'm optimistic, I am just thinking that this team absolutely cranked up the preparation and energy to 11 to make a splash in their FBS debut. I heard they had redshirted like 15 players and gotten a ton of good transfer recruits to really get their season going. This could be an Appalachian State level of team and we know they are pretty good. Certainly better than like UMass or some other terrible team we have lost to in recent years.

Obviously we went extremely vanilla on the game plan so we could ramp up and not have to pull out every trick in the book to beat this team, but they were barely beatable with vanilla prep. I'm glad we got to see who our new RB of the future is, at any rate. I am going to need to see something from the O line and special teams going forward. That fake punt was a travesty not seen since the Johnny Lineman punt fake out of the endzone. All's well that ends well, though! On to the next...

Allgeier comment was Re: his last year.

Run blocking was not top in the nation last year. There’s a reason you haven’t posted a pff link with that data.

SI's Coug's Daily does a "10 Highest-Graded Players" from each game. He gets it from another source (PFF), which you have to pay to access all of their content, but they review every play for each college (and NFL I believe) and grade every player and give them a score. Here are the top 10 from the Sam Houston State game.

            1. Jakob Robinson - 90.4
            2. Tyler Batty - 78.7
            3. Blake Mangelson - 77.9

            4. John Nelson - 77.2
            5. Weylin Lapuaho - 75.4
            6. AJ Vongphachanh - 74.0
            7. Malik Moore - 72.7
            8. Jackson Cravens - 68.1
            9. Mason Fakahua - 68.0
            10. Kamden Garrett - 67.8

I am trying to think of a better played individual game by a BYU CB ever. I can't.

It was similar to Omar Morgan in the Cotton Bowl. Great game.

And honestly, you had standup performances my 3-4 other DBs as well. I hope they are able to keep up as competition ramps up, because that was a lot of fun.

The PFF data I linked was written before the 2022 season and was summarizing the 2021 season (AKA TA's final season).

The top 10 offensive lines in college football ahead of the 2022 season
                        .
                        .
                        .
                        6. BYU COUGARS

Three starters return on the Cougars’ offensive line, which was the only unit in the country to grade above 90.0 in both pass protection and run blocking. Blake Freeland is PFF’s No. 6 tackle after posting a 91.6 pass-blocking grade last year, the best in the country among returning tackles. Another name to watch is Kingsley Sumataia. He was a top-40 recruit in the 2021 class and transferred from Oregon midway through last season. The redshirt freshman is currently in a battle for BYU’s starting right tackle spot this season.
TA was amazing, but he had a great line to open holes to run through. Help me understand what I am missing.

                        • I think TA and his line had a symbiotic relationship. But the TA comment was really just a nod to his talent. My point was that his line was probably not as good as they looked with him. Last year, our run blocking was exposed, notwithstanding several returning starters. Chris Brooks (made the Dolphins 53-man roster) was our leading rusher with something like 700 yards. He often looked underwhelming. Maybe it was just a Brooks/RB room issue, but what I saw was that the line was not nearly as good run blocking as they were in pass pro.

I don’t view that as horribly controversial and the rushing numbers probably bear that out.

I like the view of the stadium from above. It wasn't that long ago when BYU started doing these things with colors in the stands that there was poor participation.
