Yeah, the true freshman from El Paso may have earned a starting spot for next week.

I am so glad he turned down (overrated) Stanford for BYU.

        • It seemed like more of a QB than OL problem. Slovis was indecisive and inaccurate. When he was accurate on shorter throws he was shot putting the ball out there...he looked extremely uncomfortable the entire game even when there was no pressure. We know he has the physical tools so here is hoping these are first game jitters or whatever. Anyone can start with a clunker. If he repeats the performance against SUU I will officially panic.

Also I was in Florida last night catching a 7 am flight this morning and I hate my team for making me stay up to the end of that.

My jury is still out on Slovis. Missing two top receivers didn't help.
The OL didn't do the QB any favors, but with that being said, I still think Slovis massively underperformed. As another user noted, even when there wasn't any pressure, he was just wildly inacurate. A QB with his level of experience should be able to pick up on blitzes, call them out to the OL, and find the open receiver on the slant. He looked flustered the entire game. The OL made the situation worse, but I don't think the poor OL completely exonerates Slovis either.

            • After sleeping on it and letting the emotion subside, I'm concerned but less so than during the game.
The cheat code BYU is attempting with transfer talent is not a substitute for recruiting and developing talent, at least on offense. Perhaps the offensive scheme is more complicated than the defensive scheme and the transfers just haven't figured it out yet. Maybe it was unrealistic to expect Slovis to come in and be able to run it without many hiccups. But I was hoping he would. More than half of the starting O-line are tranfers as well. And I think every single one of them were playing different positions last year at BYU or where they came from. (Did Paul Maile play center for Utah last year?). I'm not surprised they looked terrible.

              • I'm just glad the offense has a couple of warm up games to get things figured out.

                • Slovis struggled but I think the bigger issue is that our receivers couldn't generate any separation.

Thrilled to see great defense for a change. Would be cool to have a strong offense and defense in the same year. (sigh...)

Were there a lot of open receivers? It's hard to tell on TV, but pretty much the entire game I was asking where the heck the receivers were. It also seemed this officiating crew was allowing the DBs to be very physical, but the last couple of years I think we had receivers who could overcome that. Having a running game the defense has to pay attention to can definitely help with that but we struggled there as well until late in the game when Martin was in.

                          • I still haven't seen the first half of the first quarter, so I didn't see the offensive fireworks of the first possession. That said, I was very underwhelmed by Slovis at QB. His passes were often off the mark. His mobility was better than I expected. When he did connect, the completion was seemingly always accompanied by a yellow flag.

As such, I was a bit surprised at how often they asked him to throw.

Agree with whoever said that the receivers didn't seem to get much separation. That is somewhat concerning.

I like Kalani but sometimes he's got to tell his inner Gary Crowton to go away.
