  • Roderick is fine. Kalani is fine. It's the first game for Pete's sake. There are always things to iron out. However.....

As I stated the offensive line needs some work. Funk is not fine.

Agreed. Like I said I will start to feel very uncomfortable if Slovis doesn't show any improvement in the next game. I expect he will show improvement but based on reports from spring and early fall camp i never expected him to struggle like he did this week. Thank goodness we have these two tuneups in our first Big 12 season.

      • The single most concerning thing to me on offense is the number of penalties. I'm hoping to see that cleaned up in short order.

        • One more thing on the aftermath of the fake punt attempt.

I was critical of Robinson in coverage early last season (not sure if I documented it here or just voiced it in my head). It seemed like if there were ever a wide open receiver, Robinson was supposed to be in coverage. He has made a ton of improvement. By the end of last season, he was doing much better and ended up with several interceptions.

Then, after Kalani's poor decision to fake the punt, Jakob bailed him out. He recognized the attempted pick play, got around it, and got the pick himself. Well played, Mr. Robinson.

          • I don't know if any of you listen/watch Locked On Cougars, but I'm really enjoying his info and analysis. He definitely bleeds blue, but also is very...based. I enjoy him much more over the BYUtv guys. Anyway, here is his analysis of BYU Football's Week 1 Performance. Youtube video link at the bottom and my bullet points that I got from listening to him.
            • No doubt that BYU struggled...but has nowhere to go, but up
            • SH only crossed the 50 yardline once (when starting on their own half), which is very impressive
            • Entire offense was disjointed
              • WRs were not running crisp routes
              • OL didn't look in-sync - disappointing since they are a veteran group
                • Zone run scheme - requires the OL to work in concert with each other
                • Players were shifted around from previous positions played
            • RBs need vision to run in the zone run scheme
              • Only LJ Martin seemed to have that vision - it wasn't necesarily his speed or strength, but his vision that set him apart
            • Mata'ava Ta'ase lost his father Saturday morning - affected the entire offense
            • Kelly Poppinga lost his nephew earlier in the week
            • Calls were not relayed in a timely fashion
            • Why was Isaac Rex put out wide as a WR so much? Passes to him felt forced.
            • Offense was very vanilla
              • Same running plays
              • Pretty basic WR patterns
            • Raider Damuni (Fr S) really impressed on defense
              • His info on byucougars says he was a 3 star recruit, but Jake Hatch said he was a 4 star "talent" - I guess talent = potential, which is different than recruit grades?
              • Had a monster hit
              • Expects him to be a starter in near future
            • Others that impressed
              • Kamden Garret (Sr CB)
              • Eddie Heckard (Sr CB)
              • John Nelson (Jr DT)
              • Darius Lassiter (Sr WR)
                • Was our best WR by a large margin
                • The other WRs couldn't get separation and that is a concern
              • Mason Fakahua (Jr TE) - most notable for run blocking
              • Mata'ava Ta'ase (Jr TE) - most notable for run blocking
              • Marcus McKenzie (Fr CB) - Special Teams ace

            • I'm surprised about the Lassiter point. I thought he missed a ton of blocks and had some lazy routes. Guess I need to watch again.

On 2nd thought, I don't think I can watch that game again.

              Thanks for the recap!

Jake Hatch seems to know his stuff, but listening to him gives me anxiety. He struggles getting things out. Reminds me of myself.

Very true on OL. They’re so soft in run blocking. Allgeier covered many of their sins.

I don't think he was saying so much that Lassiter had an A game, but more that he had a C game while all of the other WRs had F games.

I get what you're saying and I definitely noticed it the first few times that I watched him, but it doesn't bother me anymore. He definitely is more on the amateur side vs professional, but he's very good for an amateur. I watched one of the Locked On Baylor episodes where they were talking about BYU joining the B12, and the guy was literally doing it out of his dorm room. That one was very amateurish. Jake Hatch is 50x better than those guys.

He's a producer on KSL sports Zone plus fills in on the radio a fair amount. I feel like he is better on the radio where it's less scripted.

                            You guys are killing me.

                            1. Allgeier graduated two years ago and was in the NFL last year.

                            2. BYU had one of the top-rated O-lines in the NCAA last year for run blocking.

That's just how good Allgeier is. He covered the sins of the BYU OL last year while playing in the NFL.

                                #1- thanks Cpt. Obvious.

#2- You’re confusing pass pro and run blocking.
