it makes sense to allow for a more accurate evaluation of his skills, but that it indicates Nelson has an edge as the starter? not so convinced.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Nelson lobbied a week to get them to let him practice "live". The only reason for Nelson to fight so hard to take that risk is if he felt he was behind in the QB race and that without the green jersey he could better make his case for the starting position. Nelson probably wouldn't have lobbied for this if he thought he was even with Heaps as BYU coaches tend to lean to seniority if all else is even.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThey said that Bronco may have made a decision because they took the green jersey off Nelson and let him get hit.
It's unlikely that the coaches would have taken the risk either if they felt Nelson was their starting QB. That would have been, far too big of a risk and an unnecessary one at that.
It was also mentioned in one practice report (I forget which one) that the coaches would not let Heaps take off the green jersey for the same practice.
Lastly, reps against the ones are very much in Heaps favor.
Heaps vs Nelson vs 1's defense while they ran the1's offense. No using blind stats.
Thanks TBS and Wrubell for the stats.
Heaps 35-57 61% completion 373 yards 5 TD's 2 INT's
Nelson 7-16 43% completion 91 yards 3 TD's 0 INT's Ran 5 times for 27 yards.

I do not think it is indicative of anything other than Nelson being tired of being called down on whistle sacks he had beat with his feet.

I'm sure Heaps is tired of being whistle sacked on plays he could escape from too. Although he's probably more tired of receivers dropping balls that hit them right in the hands.Originally posted by Shaka View PostI do not think it is indicative of anything other than Nelson being tired of being called down on whistle sacks he had beat with his feet.

I was told that neither of them did anything yesterday in the scrimmage to separate themselves from the other and that both just looked average.Originally posted by jay santos View PostIt sounds like Nelson might have the edge right now and that both will likely play.
My preference was for Heaps to blow up and make it obvious he's the man. Since that hasn't exactly happened I'm fine with both playing for a while."Take it to the Bank"

I'm not confident in offenses that have 2 QBs sharing the duties. Can't think of a team it actually works for. I would rather have Nelson named the starter and replaced by Heaps if he tanks than having both be named co-starters.
Do the Ute fans here know what the fall camp competition between Cain and Wynn was last year? I could see a similar situation unfold for BYU this year.

[ame="http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/features/rumors"]College Football Rumors - Rumor Central -NCAA - ESPN[/ame]It's been pretty obvious from the get-go, but coach Bronco Mendenhall finally confirmed after Saturday's scrimmage that BYU's QB race is down to two contenders: junior Riley Nelson and true freshman Jake Heaps.
Though Mendenhall termed the competition "dead even," he may have tipped his hand a bit by allowing Nelson to play without a noncontact jersey. The other three QBs, Heaps included, remained off limits. By making Nelson live, Mendendall got a chance to see how Nelson responded to real pressure and actual hits.
"I figured I am going to get hit in the season," Nelson said, suggesting that he knows he is going to play, "and if we are going to have designed quarterback runs, and things like that, I gotta get used to contact because guys are flying around and there are big hits out there in Division I college football."
Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune hazards a guess as to what this means: "It showed that if Heaps is named the starter, Nelson will still play. The opposite isn't necessarily true."So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Early in camp, it was Wynn, Cain and Louks, in that order. Louks transferred after that, and Cain played better as camp went on and took the job.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostI'm not confident in offenses that have 2 QBs sharing the duties. Are you talking about the way they used Tebow? I guess I don't consider that a 2 qb system. They used Tebow in certain situations. I guess when I think of a two qb system, I think of both qb's getting equal reps during a game like South Carolina did a couple of years ago. I think Oregon St. did it as well recently. I also think Oregon did it at one point with Dixon and Leaf as well.Originally posted by CJF View PostWorked ok for Florida."Take it to the Bank"

If Heaps is the QB and Riley comes in to run option or wildcat in short yardage situations, that isn't what I would call a 2-QB system. I'd be OK with using 2 QBs the way Florida did with Leak and Tebow.
