Lame. Maybe them leaving is the only reason we got invited, but we also have to be in the same conference as Utah now. Double lame. Excitement: dampened.

BYU will have personnel differences compared to Utah that prohibits them from running a clone of Whittingham's defense. If he can mold it in a way that plays to BYU's recruiting pool, then he'll be a success. Hell, if he improves tackling alone it will be a huge improvement.

I never took Bronco's defense for granted. He had his issues but you could count on those guys to wrap up for the most part.

              That's because he demanded accountability.

Poppinga comes from the Bronco tree so maybe he'll have some influence on tweaks.

Cougars had a scrimmage today. A couple of thoughts (just my uninformed not-super-smart-at-football opinions):

Slovis was the #1 QB. He throws a nice ball. He's also clearly the least mobile QB on the field and might be a need-to-get-rid-of-the-ball quicker QB. He played a couple series and then was done.
Jake Retzlaff was the #2 QB. He' s faster than Slovis and seemed to play pretty exuberantly. He has an interesting kind of sidearm release but is reasonably accurate with it. I really like his running ability but he also stood in the pocket and fired away in the face of danger a few times. Slovis is going to start barring injury, but I'm bullish on this kid. He had the most reps on the field of any QB based on my unofficial count.
Fennigan was the clear #3. Like Retzlaff, he's faster than Slovis but not as accurate as Retzlaff or Slovis from what I could see.

Aidan Robbins seemed to struggle a bit. He's a stout back but seemed slow and had several miscues. AJ Vongphachanh easily ran him down from behind on a sweep in the opening series. I hope he was just having a rough day and we see more out of him in the future because he really didn't look that great today to my untrained eye.
The kid from Texas, LJ Martin is faster than Robbins and looked better. He's definitely going to get carries this year. Ropati and a few other ball carriers played but I didn't observe anything noteworthy.

As noted above, Vongphachanh looked good on his one and done series. All the potential starting linebackers were one series and done, as were the o-line. It's possible a few of them played more but I wasn't paying super-close attention.

Good stuff, BFM. I think college QBs can get away with an unorthodox arm motion (e.g., Ian Book) much more than NFL QBs. I hope Retzlaff does well.

LJ Martin has been getting some buzz this fall camp. It will be fun to see who earns the carries.

My budget is not great this year but I'm getting a lot of requests from the kids to go to a game this year. The easiest game to attend (schedule wise) will be Southern Utah, which may be the cheapest of most available of the games this year. Scalp method still the best way to go even though it's the inaugural Big-XII season? They'll be 4 of us most likely.

If you watch the resale market on Stubhub, etc you will see a ton of tickets become available right before the game.

With the digital tickets these days is it harder to get scalper tickets on the street?
