The bad ones (think AIG and other huge insurers) pay 170-180/hr for associates and 210/hr for partners who aren't panel counsel. I also know there are insurers we won't work for because their rates are too low.

I do a lot of insurance defense budgets. Even considering a large number of depositions and lots of experts, I've rarely turned in a budget to trial of $250k. A 500k insurance defense budget would cause the insurer to shit. Litigation can be expensive, especially when it is bet the farm litigation, but this settlement definitely isn't cost of defense driven (to return to the original point). It is clearly driven by other things. If I were to speculate, I would say this settlement is driven by a clause in the S.A. prohibiting the family from ever talking about this again. My guess, is that part of this settlement is to keep the made for TV movie, staring Dolf Lundgren, from ever being made.

Creekster is right that we can't really determine what drove the settlement but I think we can determine what didn't. In my opinion, cost of defense didn't drive it and neither did actual damages.
In Seattle the lawyers who defend the cop tort cases make bottom of the scale rates.

I have been engaged in arguments about Scott Norberg and Sheriff Arpaio on CB for years. It frankly disgusts me that so many over there are in Arpaio's corner.

I was ambivalent on Arpaio before learning about Scott Norberg. Since then, I have read dozens of articles about him and his exploits, and I feel comfortable saying he is a corrupt, evil man. Frankly, what happened to Norberg would be too soft for what Arpaio deserves.

Scott Norberg isn't the only person his deputies have killed, and it isn't the only wrongful death lawsuit Maricopa has paid for inmates who have died under Arpaio's watch. What the deputies do to the inmates is with his knowledge and blessing, if not his direction. He's a man obsessed with power, no matter who suffers as a result.

Frankly, if he were to die tomorrow, I would thank God for removing such an evil person from this earth.

I'd venture to guess that neither of you are or ever have been residents of Maricopa County.

I support Arpaio and his version of tough justice. We can drive the criminal scum back to Mexico and California. Save your tears for Sociology 101, ladies.

The end justifies the means for you.

Good for you. You deserve him, then. Hope you never end up on the wrong side of his version of "justice".

Why not just shoot them on the spot? That would save the cost/trouble of jail time.

Totally agree. That's how we roll in the C-C. Last place in Utah to hold a public hanging. Take that IPU!

Red Sox is a Nazi. Don't go and invoke Godwin's law on me. He's a total brown shirt, the very type of hate mongering scumbag thug the Nazis were, the type of person for which Godwin's law was laid down so as to ensure we are precise and instructive with the comparison when we make it.

                            Don't be ridiculous.

All of you are employing hyperbole....if that makes you feel better, that is fine.

But here's the thing: When I lived in Phoenix, I literally believe it was a safer place because of Joe Arpaio. Furthermore, he transformed jail from an air-conditioned haven to a place that actually sucked. No porn. No smokes. Oh, and why not take those criminals out and have them work instead of sucking even more from society (in the form of resources) than they already have.

Furthermore, you've yet to connect Joe Arpaio to the tragic death of Scott Norberg in a meaningful way. At the very most, he was negligent in not providing training on how to handle an inmate who was violent (in fact, he was booked for, among other things, hitting a police officer) and continuously spit on the jail guards. It was a senseless death in that all they had to do was put some sort of mask (like a surgeon's mask) over his mouth so he could spit upon himself. Prison Guards aren't babysitters..."time out" isn't going to work.

So, SeattleUte, you can call me a Nazi all you want, but Arpaio's tough, controversial justice, in my opinion, is effective--even if it ruffles the feathers of out-of-staters without connections to Maricopa County...and even if it makes the criminals uncomfortable.

You insult your own intelligence with the Nazi comparison. Your retort, not doubt will be something along the lines of "you insult your own intelligence by supporting Joe Arpaio." But reasonable minds often differ...particularly over controversial figures like Arpaio.

Come on, are you saying everything you ever do has no utilitarian element? If you really thought this through, you'd realize that you do things every day that put your life and others' lives at risk....you support programs that result in harming others and killing others (they just don't end up being railed against in the Phoenix New Times).

But, yes, I do think the ends justify the means. We all do. People who say otherwise are fooling themselves.
