If Fresno and Reno left the WAC, would the WAC cease to exist, per NCAA bylaws? I cannot remember the details, but doesn't a conference need seven teams with five years of history to remain a valid conference?

It makes me wonder a little about the truth of this $5M exit penalty. Why would Fresno leave?Originally posted by All-American View PostThere you go. Opens up another spot in the WAC. Invite the Rebels. That might be enough to keep UNR.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

What started as a coup for BYU may totally backfire if the WAC indeed crumbles.Originally posted by 8BR View PostIf Fresno and Reno left the WAC, would the WAC cease to exist, per NCAA bylaws? Because it's Fresno State. There's a point where it just isn't worth it.Originally posted by 8BR View PostBut at this point it's war. All out war. Why wouldn't the MWC just say, "we'll pay your $5M fee."At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

$5M and going to a conference with zero TV exposure.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostIt makes me wonder a little about the truth of this $5M exit penalty. Why would Fresno leave?Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

But I guess the MWC might have done it for them.Fresno State President John D. Welty said this afternoon the university could make the jump to the MWC, which formed as a WAC breakaway conference in 1998.
"Fresno State is honored to have received the invitation to join the Mountain West Conference. We are seriously considering the invitation, and do so with the best interests of our Athletics program, our university, our community and Bulldog fans as our top priorities."
Nevada president Milt Glick said his university is also considering the invitation:
"We are honored to have received the invitation to join the Mountain West Conference," Glick said in a news release. "We are seriously considering the invitation, and do so with the best interests of our athletics program, University, community and Wolf Pack fans as our priority."

Someone had better rush over to FSU and Nevada and make sure there's not a gunman in their house making them say those things. Sounded kind of rehearsed.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostLOL...I didn't notice that.
