For me at least, if it leads to the demise of the current BCS and a resettlement of traditional college football I'm all for it. I foresee this scenario with all of the upheaval. That is if the NCAA can figure out a way to get a handle on this runaway train before it does break with great national traditions.

Greed sans regulation could ultimately be the death knell to the college football we've become accustomed to.

I don't think that's such a bad idea. The NCAA has gone way beyond what it was organized to do and is woefully inconsistent and bureaucratically inept. To finally and completely abandon the 19th century (Victorian!) amateur ideals would clarify things immensely. We could cut a lot of the BS and hypocrisy that goes with the "student-athlete" label in football, and to some extent in men's basketball.

I agree. I golfed with Senioritis yesterday and as we discussed it we both lamented that there is more than just a bit of "the day the music died" feeling to go with all of this. I can only hope one day we will get a nekkid Lady Ga-Ga snogging some other chick out of this!

It will be interesting to see how it all develops.

My question is if you professionalize college football to this point, will it still have the same draw? Will you lose the pagentry? It could be a short term financial gain for the big name teams, but a long term loss when it comes to competing with the NFL.

If college football comes to resemble minor league baseball in 40 years, then I'll watch NFL football or nothing.

I don't think that colleges would let this happen but it's a thought.

I never said I didn't have any sentiment toward the game, just that csu is a much bigger game for me and most Poke fans. I think if I were a byu fan (and I do understand I'm not everybody), I'd be worried about what you mention above. A random schedule year after year would be unappealing to me. The little quirks that develop playing the same teams every year are what makes college football special.

Bono sang something like "if you glorify the past the future dries up" and, as my 98 year old grandmother told me not too long ago, "progress; no body likes it but everybody needs it."

I don't necessarily disagree with you but I also think it is too early to tell how this affects BYU's future (or gor Wyoming's future, for that matter). The fact is that I will miss some of the old battles. But the fact also remains that it was clearly a very inequitable arrangement in the MWC for BYU, with or without Utah. While I have some trepidation about this move, I cant say yet if it will be bad or good. I need to wait and see.

I'm no expert by any means, but couldn't the NCAA just say "Fine, if you leave, you lose your tax exempt status." That would cause a lot of programs to change their tune real quick. Thank about having to add a nice tax expense on your books each year. Thats 30% less revenue each year.

Anyways, just a thought.

Wednesday the Michael Lev of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER asked USC athletic director Pat Haden if he would consider the idea of USC becoming an independent in football like BYU.

Despite a new, lucrative television deal looming for the Pac-10 following the conference expanding to 12 teams with Utah and Colorado, Haden did not rule out the possibility at all. Far from it.

Haden:

“I think you always have to look at every opportunity.

“We’re a happy member of the Pac-10. I don’t have any ulterior motives or plans to advance the ball on this. I think the Pac-10 with a new commissioner and new opportunities has some growth built in already.

“But would we every consider it? I think you have to. As an athletic director in today’s environment, you have to consider every alternative.”
