Good Riddance

Count me as one who would love to see the rivalry take a much needed vacation. Anytime religion or politics are injected into the relationship, you can bet the farm that the relationship will turn acidic sooner rather than later.....and this rivalry has had years and years and buckets and buckets full of religious overtones.

Its simply become too nasty for my tastes, and I'm a thousand miles and 15 years removed from it.

I disagree, at least on some level. Statements like these make me sad:

BYU and Utah have been members of the same conference since 1909, but that association ends in 2011.

Cougars have met every year since 1922 with the exception of a three-year period (1943-45) because of World War II.

I go back and forth, although the rivalry as been part of my life ever since I was old enough to pay attention. I will miss being in the same conference with BYU. Neither school would be what it is without the other, and the excitement of following either team will not be the same.

Having said that, I see some posts here on CUF and elsewhere, occasionally, that make me feel much less nostalgic. At least my buddies who are USC or UCLA fans (and that is one nasty rivlarly) don't have to deal with cosmic, eternal, psycho-religious significance being attached to a sports rivalry (and yes, both sides do that - a lot).

but they are much less concerned about football than BYU fans. I know this is true because SU told me.

Funny how it's the Ute fans who want the rivalry to go away. I can't say I blame them. The rivalry is a lot more stressful when you're expected to win each year. BYU has been dealing with this for the last 30 years.

Actually, this is just the kind of post that takes a lot of the fun out of being here.

(Just a note: As I stated, I am ambivalent about the rivarly. I have days when I love it and days when I could do without it. I do not know what you mean by "it's the Ute fans who want the rivalry to go away." Maybe you don't either.)

???? you are a pretty even keeled guy, how can you say that about this post of Donut's? (unless you mean the dark orchid or whatever it is, then I agree completely). It seems like it si ok for us to tell Utes that everything is great about the move to the PAC-10 but if we give nay samck then we are ridiculous (SU) or sucking the fun out of the place (LAYoute). His comment was straight up football smack; no religion, no social issues, etc. Come on, man, suck it up.

Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for what looks like another reflexive jab at Ute fans in a thread that started out as not about one school or another, but about the rivalry. As for SU, I am not responsible for what he says, just as you are not responsible for Donuthole.

The rivalry will never go away, even if the teams stop playing (which they won't).

I can only speak for Ute fans (moreso utefans.net than my fellow Utes on CUF), but it's funny how they're wishing so hard for a break or even an end, yet continue to discuss BYU, possibly more than they have in previous summers.

BYU and Utah fans will continue to share the same workplaces, neighborhoods, wards, bars, families, message boards, friends, etc. and the rivalry will never die.

For every BYU fan that finds themselves pulling for Utah because they aren't in the MWC anymore, there will be another BYU fan that becomes bitter because they left the MWC. And for every Utah fan that now pulls for the "Church" school because the result doesn't affect the Utes, another Utah fan will become condescending and arrogant.

C'mon Il Pad. I'm one of the oldest denizens of this board, having seen my first BYU game in the Eldon Fortie era. I remember when Virgil Carter beat the Utes for the first time in a millenium. But for most of us on this board, and this includes BYU71 and PAC, this rivalry really gained its chops once LaVell came on board. Before that, it was kind of like the current BYU/USU rivalry - not much too it and not much of a rivalry. It would be a shame to let the rivalry die because the teams are now in a different conference.

Now, all the self-pity and ingracoiusness by BYU fans has soured me on the rivalry. I say the Holy War needs a mercy kill.
