For the record - everyone keeps hounding BYU for kicking out McMahon. I'm not sure that's exactly what happened.

McMahon has said that after the bowl game he had a message from the standards committee that they wanted to meet with him. He basically told his room mate "I think they're going to throw the book at me now that my eligibility is done." And he never actually went to meet with them.

Would they have kicked him out? I don't know...maybe. Maybe he would've been on probation. Maybe something else would've happened. Who knows.

But the reality is that BYU didn't kick Jim out. He left on his own terms.

I do think it's unfortunate that he believed he would be kicked out. I think it doesn't speak well of BYU that their process which is supposed to be based on love and compassion and helping those who have made mistakes to repent is a process that folks are afraid of. Then again - McMahon wasn't exactly repentant either. So I kind of find fault on both sides.

All that aside - I'm very happy that they seem to be working out their differences. I'm also kind of glad that BYU isn't changing the rule just for McMahon - I think that they need to follow the rules in place. But once he finishes and is in - it wouldn't disappoint me if they reviewed the rule and made some changes to it. I know that seems weird and counter-intuitive. I want them to work with him and help him through the process. I don't want them to just blow off the rules. Change them, sure.

Jimmy should be in the HoF, but I wonder what the academic requirement, if any, should be. On the one hand, I think I'd oppose the admission of a one-year wonder (esp. in b-ball) where a kid used the year to prep for the NBA/NFL and did the bare minimum to remain academically eligible. On the other hand, if he stayed all four years, remained eligible throughout, but fell a little short of graduation I wouldn't oppose admission. What line, if any, should be drawn?....

McMahon dissed the school and it's "code" not only verbally but physically while he was there. However, I stongly suspect if we have that on field ceremony he will receive a huge ovation. Deservedly so in my opinion.

When Davies was allowed to sit with the team, he received a strong positive reception for the crowd.

Do you think it bugs any of the higher ups that your average fan doesn't have much respect for the Honor Code?

The higher ups that really matter believe in repentance and forgiveness. Quit trying to position yourself like a mullah.

I would guess that all of them believe in repentance and forgiveness. Part of the repentance process is a contrite heart or maybe it is spirit and restitution. Measuring those things is probably where the differences comes into play.

How contrite is Jimmy Mac and has he paid restitution? I would give him a passing grade, but know who counts will ask my opinion.

I agree. Probably to no ones surprise. Everyone knows my feelings when it comes to the contrite spirit and restitution that has to be paid at BYU.

No major universities that I can find. At one point I looked at USC, UCLA, Michigan, The Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, and a few others. I found a Division II school that does.

I keep hearing this - and that the rule was passed when McMahon was a senior or something like that. But is it more than just speculation? (With some circumstantial evidence to be sure - but speculation nonetheless.)

Meanwhile, McMahon is working toward getting those final few credit hours he needs to earn his diploma from BYU, which would then allow him to have his rightful place in the school's athletic hall of fame.

"I've got two classes to go," he said, saying that when he was in school he was "smart enough to get somebody else to do my homework."

"I was gonna enroll in this math class this fall, but they told me to wait because I might qualify for special-ed math now. I might be able to pass that class — I hope — and then I'll have one other class to do, whatever I want. I'm hoping this winter I can take whatever classes I need and I should be done by next fall, hopefully."
