Where exactly did I mention football in that quote?

I believe in a separation of church and football. God is on my side.

Can someone explain the advantage of BYUTV aside from the ad revenue? From what I've read (various TBS posts), BYU TV could show live games and do advertising. However, the real money with these new conference networks (e.g. BTN) is in the subscriber revenue

The reason why there is such a large subscriber base for BYUTV is because satellite and cable providers carry BYUTV in order to fulfill a FTC regulation related to percentage of public interest programming carried versus overall channel capacity (4-7%). In other words, 4-7% of a provider's channels must be related to public interest (I found this information using my google-fu, see this link: http://dishuser.org/pi.php). BYUTV counts as public interest programming because of its religious content.

Anyway, BYUTV can't charge subscriber fees for these channels because the regulations require that the channel be free. So, I guess you're right in the sense that it could function as NBC lite (e.g. anyone who has cable/satellite will get BYUTV). But if the real money is made via the subscriber revenue, is BYUTV's potential ad revenue broadcasting Big XII games that attractive. Also, IANAL, but would showing heavy amounts of live sports programming like that potentially void BYUTV's categorization as a public interest channel?.

        Dear Tom Holmoe,

Good things come to those who wait. You can't make this happen and I'm afraid you'll do harm (I heard you with Kyle Whittingham last week; egads what a contrast). Don't talk about it; stay out of it; don't do anything.

        Sincerely,

Last week we were listening to KALL 700 (not by choice--it's the only sports station we can get down here) during the press conference of the big announcement. With no prompting from me, my wife, who is much less anti-Ute than I, says, "Wow. He really has a doctorate degree?" Made me laugh a little.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Dr. Hill's works speak for themselves.

Why did BYU hire a guy to be AD who brought Cal big recruiting santions? People like that should be banned for life from working in college athletics.

                As do Holmoe's.

My point is, you're hardly in a position to criticize anyone for lack of eloquence. That press conference was embarrassing.

                  How so?

I was there and thought it was fine.

You can check the Press Conference thread as it was going on. I have never heard Dr. Hill sound like this , but that is what he sounded like. I just chalked it up to ecstatic exuberance. Really it must have been like an out of body experience for him, so he gets a pass from me.

Yeah, he didn't look as composed as he usually does. Of course, I was finally on board with the Utes getting invite, so I was caught up in it as well.

Sorry. I don't buy that. I think even Dr. Hill is overrated compared to the coaches. AD's are mostly paper pushers.

But at least Hill hasn't been reduced to hiring the only available coach. He gets credit for hiring Majerus and Pope Urban. He probably had to hire Whit, but adroitly handled the bidding war with BYU. He may have had something to do with leveraging the Olympics to improve the Ute stadium. He has raised a lot of money, kept people like Huntsman loyal, without the benefit of church ties to the U of U. He didn't screw up the Pac 10 thing.

Holmoe seems like just a paper pusher, and a dishonest one (based on his recruiting violations at Cal).

Anyway, I really do think that Hill didn't make Utah's admission to the Pac 12 happen, any more than I think Homoe can will BYU's admission to the Big 12-2. He can only screw it up.

                          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Tom Holmoe reads emails sent to him, but not open letters on CUF. If you were really tapped into the AD, you would know that.

As an aside, I would look into the non-profit status of BYUTV and what the effects of commercializing it would be on its future availability.

The violations had nothing to do with recruiting--two players received credit from the university for courses they did not take, and no one, the NCAA included, has suggested Holmoe knew of this.

Cal was on probation for earlier recruiting violations, but that was in basketball (a basketball is round, the football is pointy--hope this helps) and in any case those violations occurred the year before Holmoe was hired as head coach.

You must be grateful the Sullivan case allows the uninformed to write things that most would deem libelous.
