Anyone that believes you can dispense with sports rivalries because they're useless is clueless. It was incredibly stupid that the Big 12 after the merger didn't have Nebraska and Oklahoma playing every year and it likely contributed to Nebraska leaving the Big 12 -- that and the unwise to decision to leave all four Texas schools in one division. They needed at least one cross divisional dedicated rivalries for each school. I would have kept Oklahoma and Nebraska in the same division, kept six of the of the old Big 8 together and swapped the Kansas schools for Texas Tech and Baylor. Oklahoma could have still played Texas every year.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post
A one-sided rivalry is not much of a rivalry. Utah took a break from playing us because we were no longer useful to them. They moved on. We didn't.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I think the destruction of the Nebraska/Oklahoma rivalry is actually a lesson that the conferences have learned and will respect. The Big Ten reorganized several years ago to place traditional rivals (and manufactured rivals such as Nebraska/Iowa) in the same division, despite that meaning the Big Ten East is far stronger than the West. The Big 12 prioritized traditional rivalries such as Bedlam and KU/KSU at the end of the season after contraction. This year is a weird transition with the new members and OU/Texas departing, but I fully expect them to make sure traditional rivals play the last game of the season whether they are in the same division or it is a protected cross division rivalry that is played ever year. Games I expect to be played Thanksgiving weekend: ASU/Arizona, BYU/Utah, Kansas/Kansas State, Baylor/TCU, Texas Tech/Houston, and Colorado/Oklahoma State. If Oklahoma eventually works out a deal to continue Bedlam, then Colorado will play Iowa State.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View Post

I think BYU will compete well with Utah with similar resources. Over ten years I expect it to be a very competitive rivalry. They might have moved on as you say, but they have been moved back whether they, or BYU fans, like it or not.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I agree we will come back to each other over time. I do believe it will be a few years before the existing gap is fully bridged.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View Post

I was always a big fan of the rivalry, even though most of my BYU-loving neighbors are total nerds that take things way to seriously. Glad to see that it would appear that the Big 12 is going to force a rivalry game annually in November as it should be. Balance has been restored and everything is right in the world again.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOK, I am over it.
TO ALL OF OUR UTE FAN POSTERS:
Congrats on getting the lifeline and welcome to the B12. While I really wanted Utah to wander in the wilderness for a while like BYU did, that was a reflection of my hope for Utah athletics as an institution, and is not a reflection of my feelings for you guys or my other ute friends. Now that we are in the same conference again, hopefully you engage with us even more going forward.
While Utah has enjoyed a huge institutional advantage over BYU since joining the P12, we are now on a level playing field. I expect it might take a while for BYU football to fully level up in terms of recruits, etc. but it is going to be fun. I also expect BYU to already be even or superior to Utah in most other sports and to be way ahead in terms of fan support. Maybe someday Utah can lose those dumb curtains at the Huntsman. Haha.
And bring wally back. I miss that guy.
