There is not chance to avoid the best teams in a round robin schedule. A round-robin produces a true conference champion where there can be no argument. Hard to argue that a 10 team Big 12 with a conference champion decided by a regular season would not get a seat at the 4 team playoff. A round-robin schedule only provides 3 opportunities to schedule down in the OOC games. Twelve team leagues typically have 4 opportunities to get a cupcake on the schedule.

What I am saying is that the complaint you raised that a round-robin schedule provides an opportunity to skate is simply not true. By definition a round-robin schedule provides zero opportunity to skate since you are required to play everyone in your league.

The only way the Big 12 goes to 12 teams is if it makes them more money or if the NCAA steps in and requires uniformity between conferences.

Two things:

A round robin is, IMO, the best way to crown a champion. Even better if done as in basketball where every team plays every other team home and away.

However, one point missed here (I skimmed a lot of this thread) is that conferences with conference championships play 13 games to get a champion vs. 12 games in the round robin format. One more time to get beat and that one more time ALWAYS comes at the end of the season after injuries may have piled up.

I think when TH made his statement regarding what happened (or didn't happen) with the B12 he put the best possible spin on things from an admin point of view. Can you imagine how crazy the fan base would go if he said something like, "We had discussions with the B12 but we overplayed our hand by demanding too much with the result an offer was never tendered. Oops, our bad!"


The above would be consistent with his current story.
