I'm a little disappointed you haven't busted out the "This thing's not over yet. Long ways to go still . . ." line for the Big 12 debacle. It's so fitting.

        Big12 - Colorado - NU - A&M + TCU - Mizzou + WVU + Louisville = 10?

        Hey, Chip is talking so...
Louisville and WVU have 27 months to wait before they can leave the Big Least. Neither of those teams will be able to keep the Big 12 at 10 teams for either the 2012 or 2013 season. So, if Mizzou leaves, and they don't replace them with another school that can join in time for 2012, then they will have 9 teams for 2012 and possibly 2013. The Big 12 can't drop below 10 or they lose the Fox contract. It would seem that only BYU, or possibly a MWC/CUSA could fill that void in time.

WVU and Louisville are simply not options for 2012 or 2013. (Unless of course there is some clause in the Big Least contract that voids the 27 month wait if the conference loses X number of teams)

I keep reading this argued as fact, but I've never actually seen it reported that way. It has always been supposition that 9 teams may be reason for voiding the contract. In any event, it seems clear that both Fox and ESPN are as involved in these negotiations as the conference and the teams. If the Big12 had to play with nine teams for a season, I'm sure that could be worked out with all parties.

That being said, I'm sure it is not ideal, and I know the 9 Big12 teams would be scrambling to find opponents at this late date to fill 2012 openings.

My understanding is the same as yours....dropping below 10 does not void the contract, it gives Fox the option of voiding the contract. A small but important distinction.

And I would be willing to guess that the B12 has already been in lengthy discussions with Fox to determine exactly what will happen if it drops to 9. It is quite possible that nothing will happen to the contract for a season. Obviously I'm hoping that they expand back up to 10 quickly, though.

Good points, but amidst all this I've never heard anything that contradicts that the league needs to maintain 10 teams for the current contract with Fox to remain. I guess its an assumption. Being that Fox originally made the contract with a 12 team Big 12 I can't see them keeping it if 1/3 of the original teams have left and it remains only 9 teams (with the addition of TCU). But you've both got good points, its just "reports" and conjecture that we have to go on.

Contracts are made to be renegotiated. I am sure all that would happen is that the contract would be restructured to avoid the windfall that the big 12 would enjoy if they dropped to 9. This isn't a big deal and not a major reason to add a team.

I still think he is an awful nice guy who got caught up in the adoration of CB. Probably the first information was innocent enough, but then had to play the role CB had honored him with.

While I agree about contracts being structured to be renegiotated and that it may not be a big deal with FSN - FSN could very well make it a big deal. From a market share standpoint, the Big12 is arguably losing the largest slice of the Big12 pie after Texas and OU. That's a lot of lost revenue that FSN could potentially renegotiate. So it does give FSN significant leverage: go to 10 teams or lose X million in revenue. But FSN and the Big 12 might be OK with the reduced revenue - it's less of a payout for FSN and the Big12 per share might not change all that much. I would think it depends on whether BYU gets the "PAC-12 Utah treatment". In theory, each share could be greater for existing Big 12 schools if the total revenue amount from FSN stays unchanged and BYU doesn't get a full share immediately. Also, FSN might think swapping Missouri for BYU is a "fair trade" but not if BYU gets to rebroadcast games quickly on BYUtv.

The BYUtv rebroadcast is good for BYU fans who don't (or won't) subscribe to FSN. FSN coverage might provide greater exposure but I question whether that is assurred if showing games on FSN comes at the expense of ESPN. I think that's why BYU is wanting to hold onto the BYUtv rebroadcast rights and to try and negiotate guaranteed appearences on ABC/ESPN. In my view, BYU wants to play with the "Big Boys" but on BYU's terms. I also think the Big12 and the networks want BYU (BYU > Missou) but not on those terms so we keep reading about Louisville and West Virginia as options.
