The Big 12 expansion groundswell

I have been told this by a couple of people in the Utah media about Dick when it comes to BYU sports.

The funniest story involving Dick Harmon is when he had his "Dewey Defeats Truman" moment. His article citing sources saying Kyle Whittingham would become the coach of BYU hit the front porches just after Kyle had made his late-night announcement that he was staying at Utah.

The funny part was when Harmon later told his co-workers who the main source was

Chip Brown on the Big 12 AD meetings in Dallas...

The Big 12 athletic directors are holding meetings in Dallas Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss the league's future plans as they await a commitment from Missouri.

If Mizzou commits to the Big 12, the conference will begin to act on bringing in at least one more school and possibly more.

Missouri's AD will be at the meetings from what I'm told.

I think the Mizzou board of curators is getting a lot of feedback to bolt for the SEC. So I think they have to talk it out. They need to hear from Chuck Neinas.

Gary Pinkel has been outspoken that there are problems in the Big 12 and has indirectly pointed the finger at Texas. So there's no question Pinkel is probably pushing for the SEC.

The question I'm trying to get answered is if the SEC has an unconditional invitation for Mizzou. There's mixed opinion on that from the people I'm talking to.

Mike Slive said Monday the SEC "anticipates" being a 13-team league. But you have to think he could have added the words ... for now ... at the end of that sentence.

There are members who were beyond frustrated with Mizzou last year. But their chancellor Brady Deaton is the chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors and has been spearheading the drive to save the Big 12.

So there's a potential conflict of interest right there. If Mizzou's board of curators wants the SEC, Deaton will obviously have to resign his post as the head of the B12 board of directors.

If Slive is serious, all this Mizzou talk is moot. But the Big 12 officials I'm talking to aren't going to consider Missouri a part of the long-term future of the Big 12 until they say they are a part of the long-term future of the Big 12.

I don't think there would be a push to boot Mizzou. Not this time. Some schools in the league would consider the Big 12 not viable without MU. Just shows how roughed up this league has been by the last six weeks (starting with A&M's push to leave).

BYU has one last shot to seal a great deal here. Not saying they wouldn't otherwise but consider:

1. Big 12 needs a #10.
2. UL could be that team but has to wait 27 months (unless a BEAST dissolution).

So, BYU takes #10 and gets what it wants or it risks seeing the BEAST come apart, and invites to UL/WVU...

This will be the ESPN conference, so I am really coming around to BYU getting the #10 spot, one more added and then a hold out for ND?

True man, BYU looked to have a pretty good negotiating position until Oklahoma decided to go all crazy, Superconference speculation madness began, and it became apparent that BYU really had nowhere to go in the Super-world.

Filling the #10 spot seems like a must for the Big 12 to keep its TV contract, unless they want to chance voiding it and negotiating a new one... at which point the immediate need for BYU suddenly looses steam. That said, without A&M I don't see a better TV contract without BYU and it's national fanbase, and nobody out there will bring more TV sets unless they can snag PAC or Big 10 defectors, or somebody in the ACC suddenly gets disgruntled... IMHO.

I just want to see the look on BIG 12 faces when they see a BYU "Tailgate" party, which looks more like a heavily sponsored Family Home Evening. Luckily Provo is giving Liquor licenses to everybody, opening up a massive three story bar and club on Center Street, and possibly lifting the liquor sale ban on Sundays, to accommodate visitors.
