Same. That is why I asked. The point was brought up before that we didn't think BYU and Utah would ever break up (it's hard to do afterall) but I just don't see two current BCS rivals splitting. It's obviously not unheard of in this whole conference realignment of the past 12 months but seems unlikely with Pitt and WV.

Vedderhall was all over the big 12 being a done deal last year. His "sources" confirmed it... until his credibility was completely shot. I can't believe that same guy is posting again this year... I'll bet he's a Ute having a blast.

A "No comment" instead of a flat denial. Awesome. The only way Pitt comes is in a package deal with Notre Dame, and BYU rounds out the 12!
Notre Dame isn't joining the Big 12. BYU may be joining the Big 12... but Notre Dame won't be.

The Big 12 might get it together, but right now it looks a mess. BYU is obviously the easiest get with value for them... and even BYU is holding their nose.

        • I suspect that ND is going to wait until the superconference race is on before picking a conference. Then they sit back and wait for the highest bidder. That is what I would do if I were in charge at ND.

I mean, the Big 12 decided to stay at 10 wholly because it wasn't excited about any available candidate, wasn't it?

So your post doesn't really address Solon's actual point.
Seattle Ute's observation did occur to me, and it's a worthwhile conversation to have, but I honestly didn't want to bring that part into it (for, I hope, obvious reasons). Instead, I was more interested to know (as the question was so well articulated above by smokymtnrain): from whence comes this notion that aTm has to leave before the byu can be invited? Is it just this rumor/allegation/fact(?) that the Big-12 needs to stay at 10 teams to keep the TV money rolling in? Is it one of these media ideas that just gets recycled into "fact"?

It seems to me that the byu has better options than sitting around on prom night hoping that someone's date fell through. Why doesn't the Big-12 just invite the byu outright, thereby destroying aTm's leverage? Obviously there are many factors at work, but I hope one of them is the byu's reluctance to be just a contingency plan.

If the Big-12 were serious about expanding, it would expand - regardless of aTm's actions. Big-12 folks might be deep into the nitty-gritty of making this happen for all we really know. But that's just it - we don't really know.

Both smr and mbn mentioned that there were a lot of reasons for the Big-12 to stay at 10 teams. I believe them, but don't really know what these are. I might guess that the biggest reasons have to do with an easier path to the BCS championship game and fewer mouths among which to divide that BCS paycheck, but there also have to be benefits to having a championship game.

So, I guess we're still at Square 1, which means nothing has really happened.

Good luck with all the ups and downs, byu fans. Seriously.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.
