Maybe they are just smart enough to recognize that obsessing over things like world university rankings when it comes to a football conference would be really dumb.

Or dumb enough to recognize that obsessing over things like world university rankings when it comes to a football conference would be really smart. One of the two.

      • Cracks are starting to form in Colorado with the Pac12-2's plan to stick together....

Keeler: Get out, CU. If the Big 12 offers Buffs lifeline out of lying, dying Pac-12, they’d be crazy not to take it.

The two biggest football programs in your conference demand more television revenue than the rest of the league, including you, if they’re to stick around.

They’re also a constant target of poaching rumors, the most desirable brands to the bigger fish circling the Power 5 pond. And they know it.

Despite a unified public front, despite promises of unity, deep down, half the schools don’t trust the other half.

        Big 12, circa 2009, meet the Pac-12, circa 2022.

And the Buffs are right back where they started.

        Get out, CU.

If the Big Ten won’t return your calls, and the Big 12 does, along with a lifeline, you’d be crazy not to take it.
        [...]
You don’t want to go back to Ames? Or Stillwater? We get it. Granola and brisket don’t always mix.

But the Pac-12 you signed up for is gone. It’s over, financially and competitively.

To put it another way, if push came to shove, in six years, would you rather be in a league with San Diego State, Boise State and Fresno State? Or in a conference with Iowa State, Kansas State, West Virginia and Cincinnati?
        [...]
No option short of a Big Ten escape pod is a step up for CU. A Pac-10 with Oregon, Washington and Utah as its leading brands can talk all day about unity and togetherness, but without the Los Angeles television eyeballs, that broadcast revenue is only going one direction: Downward.
        [...]
“We used to have a wonderful scholarship model,” Todd Berry, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, lamented to me earlier this year. “With the NIL, now, it’s kind of more about, ‘How much money can I risk to buy (a player) from another team?’”

Get out, CU. Is it worth the risk for this kind of déjà vu, all over again?
        https://www.denverpost.com/2022/07/2...a-realignment/

Oregon and UW would be crazy not to take a lifeline from the Big 12 as well... They could always jump to the B1G if that opportunity presented itself later.

BYU should have been a P5 long ago. The PAC had their chance.

            Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I wouldn't know... I avoid CB just because they use 1970's technology for software, it seems. (And they complain when I turn on my ad blocker.) Not to mention there are a lot of folks there I find irritating. I do follow him on twitter.

                • The Big 12 must be going after Oregon and UW... Given how quite they have been:

The Big 12 is making a power move. They want to look strong. For this reason, everything is being done behind closed doors with five locks and an army of security guards. What the Big 12 does not want to happen is for them to send an invitation to a team, it get turned down and then have it get out to the public.

When and if the Big 12 makes a move, they want it to look like they made one direct and strong decision, no plans B, C or D. This is especially true if a team like Oregon or Washington turn down an offer and Stanford and Cal join. Nothing would look worse than news getting out that Washington turned down the conference, and so the Big 12 settled on Cal.

And maybe Cal and Stanford too.

                  • Is there any rational adult that thinks the B12 is a good place to be?

The way it seems to me is that if you aren’t in the SEC or B1G you are going to be relegated to a second rate D1. I really like Mike Leach’s thoughts on this -

                    https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/se...lege-football/

I don’t see a draft but something drastic has to be done if there’s going to be any salvation for college football.

I see something like this in 5-10 years:

                    Sec:

                    Alabama
                    Georgia
                    Miami
                    Florida
                    Florida state
                    Clemson
                    Texas
                    Oklahoma
                    Ole miss
                    A&M
                    LSU
                    Auburn
                    Missouri
                    Tennessee
                    Virginia
                    Pitt

Maybe 3-4 more from the scraps of the acc and sec

                    B1G

                    Penn state
                    Ohio state
                    Michigan
                    Michigan state
                    Wisconsin
                    Nebraska
                    Iowa
                    Washington
                    Ucla
                    USC
                    Colorado
                    Houston
                    Washington
                    Oregon
                    Arizona state
                    Note dame

Maybe 3-4 more from the P12 and B12

With this you’ll get some schools that convert to a Gonzaga situation and become ‘basketball only’ schools, places like:

                    Duke
                    North Carolina
                    Arizona
                    Kansas
                    Wake Forest
                    NC State
                    Kentucky

But 40 programs in with the big TV contracts and major bowls and all the other schools in some sort of ncaa amateur division. They’ll maintain D1 status with the other schools becoming NFL lite.

The Big 12 is going to be one hell of a basketball conference with the additional of AZ and Zaga for basketball only. And not a bad football conference.

I suspect a lot of schools will be cutting football... SU implied that Utah may be one of them. The USFL and XFL will start being the feeder leagues for the NFL.

Yes, that seems like the way things are going. Teams like Utah and BYU are on the bubble. Maybe they make the cut, maybe they don't. That said, surviving this round in the B12 is a good thing.

Yeah, I raised my eyebrows at those first two, and must have completely overlooked Houston. I would put both ASU and CU in the bubble category.

If this is about television Colorado is in and the B1G will want a Texas presence. I could see a scenario where Utah gets in as well with the B1G since SLC is a top 30 media market and the Utes have been wildly successful over the last 20 years.

I just don’t see why the Mississippi States and Indianas of the NCAA get a piece of the pie.

Colorado?... no. Houston?... no. Utah?.... nope.

DFW is a top 5 market... Why not SMU or TCU? Just because the school is located there doesn't mean they own the market. BYU gets more eyeballs in SLC than Utah.

Miss State has been a long time member of the SEC. Not a chance they will be kicked out.

Does BYU really get more eyeballs than Utah? I thought I read something by SI that Utah is ranked higher. Maybe that’s just because Utah has played in the Rose Bowl, multiple P12 championship games, a Sugar Bowl and a Fiesta Bowl while BYU has been playing in the Liberty Bowl.

This line of thinking makes zero sense to me, the idea that since you are a long time member you are in. Again why would you share money with MSU and Vanderbilt and South Carolina and Indiana and Purdue and Minnesota when you can jettison those programs and share money with programs that actually move the needle like: Clemson and Oregon and Washington and Miami and Florida State?

ACC is done they just don’t realize it yet, they’ll be raided soon. The P12 saw this coming which is why they tried to poach Texas and Oklahoma years ago.
