      True, but out of context.

Bronco: Whitt told you you could serve a mission? Well that may be true, but can you serve your mission honorably knowing when you get back you could be called to practice or play on the Sabbath. You will remember teaching the importance of the sabbath day and disregard that in order to play USC, UCLA? If you even have to think about that for a minute, you are the type of kid we want.

Doesn't this conversation usually happen when the kid is already out in the field?

So I think it is time we few, we happy few, we band of brothers do a little celebrating and talking about how much fun this is going to be. Enough worrying about tender feelings, this is going to be awesome. I can't wait to see the 2011 schedule. Also on the docket are stadium expansion and perhaps an indoor practice facility? Those are expensive but this is more money than we will have ever had, a lot, lot more.

It will also be very interesting to see what we reap next winter on signing day. You have to think there is going to be a nice bump there. Basically there as never been a better time to be a Utah football fan. The Pac 10 is going to be fun and we are going to be competitive there in 2011 and 2012 with Wynn as a junior and senior.

Utah already has an indoor practice facility.

I hope the Utes understand how incredibly lucky (and yes I believe you create your own luck) they are to receive this invite. When I think of everything that had to happen the way it did to join the BCS my head spins. The Utes have won what, 3 conference championships in how many years? But two of those years were spectacular. Talk about the most fortuitious snapshot in time (right SU?). But aside from what the Utes have done, everything else from TV contracts to the BCS, to the other conferences expanding and contracting, etc., it all contributed to Utah becoming an AQ school. It was the perfect storm. Austin Collie said it best. Or maybe I'm thinking of Forrest Gump. Unreal.

Bronco: Whitt told you you could go on a mission, go to a school with a strong LDS environment, and play in the Pac? Come to BYU, we play Wyoming and UNLV, plus we kick you out of school and ruin your life if you make a mistake.

If you are a BYU fan, you just have to hope kids have priorities higher than football. Access to more LDS chicks. A belief that God wants them at his University. A desire to be in an environment that caters totally to his culture.

You also have to hope his parents are scared to death that the kid at any other school will fall prey to the evils of the world.

Otherwise, under this new scenario I can't imagine why a highly rated kid would pick BYU over Utah. I can see how he might pick other schools over Utah, but not BYU.

I am not trying to be a downer person here, just looking at facts as I see them.

Utah's strategy before Whitt was to distinguish themselves from BYU. Majerus and UM won with non-LDS. Whitt has the right strategy, especially with BCS affiliation. Utah needs to rebrand themselves as the new BYU. You still go after non-LDS, in fact you go after higher quality non-LDS than you ever have, but your primary message is that you're the new BYU. Whitt's the perfect guy to do it for FB. Get rid of Boylen and hire the best LDS BB coach you can find. You knock BYU out and you leverage yourself into a top 20 FB and BB program.
