Utah's strategy before Whitt was to distinguish themselves from BYU. Majerus and UM won with non-LDS. Whitt has the right strategy, especially with BCS affiliation. Utah needs to rebrand themselves as the new BYU. You still go after non-LDS, in fact you go after higher quality non-LDS than you ever have, but your primary message is that you're the new BYU. Whitt's the perfect guy to do it for FB. Get rid of Boylen and hire the best LDS BB coach you can find. You knock BYU out and you leverage yourself into a top 20 FB and BB program.
I totally agree with this. Now I am in the enviable position of having Utah as my second favorite team. I really like Whitt. To the "true" BYU fan I know this is heresy, but I am out for just myself and my own pleasure.
I have come to the conclusion BYU will not take the steps to become a compassionate conservative school. There is too much fear they will lose control of the students and perhaps control of the future of the church.
Utah on the other hand could be that compassionate conservative school. Mormon girls all around. Heck, Utes have married BYU coeds, USU coeds and UVU coeds. They aren't limited to Ute coeds. There is a great institute program. You have a coach an atmospere condusive to understanding your peculiar religion. The only downside is you don't have the weight of the honor code to make sure you stay on the straight and narrow.
Now you can also go out and recruit non-LDS kids. They can come without the fear of being outed if you disobey one of the rules of the dominant culture. I really think the combo of getting the best LDS kids along with being able to recruit kids who don't have to behave like LDS kids, could provide a very powerful athletic program.

I thought this was going to be the model for BYU greatness, but we retrenched after Gangbang I and Gangbang II, the brethren/BOT don't seem to have this vision for BYU athletics, Utah moved in as a direct competitor, and now with this conference affiliation issue, I see a real turning point.
Simply awesome. These are the little nuggets you find when you have enough OCD to read every thread.
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."
"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."
"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

I agree. It's true that the greatest comedy is born from the ashes of tragedy and despair.

Yes they were invited has Utah accepted yet? Save your Kaboom. I have already conceded that it will happen but it has not happened yet, lets not rehash these same conversations tomorrow.
