Utes really struggling with recruiting.......

Kyle almost completely abandoned the State of Utah this year in recruiting they really focused heavily on Texas and California. 9 of the top 13 kids in the State of Utah are going to BYU. Some might say this is a bad thing, but local kids no matter what state they are from, are less likely to decommit for whatever reason. Maybe its because they are comfortable and close to home, maybe they do not want to disappoint friends and neighbors. But they are less likely to decommit. Its an interesting strategy abandoning your home state, we will see in a few years how it worked for Kyle.*Banned*

Failing to recruit good local talent can also alienate the home town fan base. When Rocky Long coached UNM, he would go after the best talent in New Mexico, even if they were only two stars. One result was better attendance at games, another was better community support. Locksley abandoned local recruiting in favor of east coast players and the results are poor recruiting and lack of fan support.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostKyle almost completely abandoned the State of Utah this year in recruiting they really focused heavily on Texas and California. 9 of the top 13 kids in the State of Utah are going to BYU. I am not suggesting that Kyle has abandoned local kids. He has signed some of the Pleasant Grove players, etc. But he needs make sure that he doesn't give the impression that the local boys are not good enough. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

We have three commits for the 2011 class, and all are in-state. Isaac Asiata will probably be a top 10 guy, and Jordan Robles will be top 15-20.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostKyle almost completely abandoned the State of Utah this year in recruiting they really focused heavily on Texas and California. 9 of the top 13 kids in the State of Utah are going to BYU. As for this year, we'll be just fine. We have 19 committed right now, and we'll sign 3-4 more kids on top of that, two of which will be 4-star guys."I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

I love you man, but "we'll be just fine fine" will not do it justice. This will be Whit's best recruiting year ever, by far. He's got at least three stellar receivers (ESPN's favorite is not among the two Rivals likes best and he got a fine one from in-state), two qb's better touted than anything he's ever landed before (including Wynn and Robles), baby Kruger, an OL offered by Nebraska and a bunch of other BCS schools including Illinois from whom he's decomitting, one of the top all-purpose backs in the country, and much more including those two additional four star studs you've promised us. The overall quality is better than ever.Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostWe have three commits for the 2011 class, and all are in-state. Knowing SU's penchant for hyperbole, USS Utah's statement "we're doomed" may be appropriate.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI love you man, but "we'll be just fine fine" will not do it justice. With respect to Kona......there's a 50/50 chance of him still signing with BYU but paying his own way the first semester (perhaps even his first year). My guess is that his dad and he made a rash decision while at the airport given an ultimatum. My guess is that their view of the situation is 180 degrees off how Bronco viewed the same situation. Huge misunderstanding. So now they get together and work something out.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostWhit probably felt he could take a chance on a kid since this would be his only two star signee. Per Rivals Utah and BYU each now have 16 three stars, and Utah has 2 and BYU 3 four stars (with BYU's recent Kona decommit, a huge blow). Utah has had integrity about quality over quantity this year, as evidenced by 19 Utah commits compared with 28 for BYU. On the other hand, see Junkie's list of non-LDS BYU recruits in that other thread if you want to see a bunch of guys only offered by BYU and teams you hardly ever hearrd of. Still, even with this huge disparity in numbers committed, Utah is ranked 42 and BYU 37, and Utah has a lot of getting to do before signing day next week. Meanwhile, two of Utah's best recruits are a pro-style qb and offensive guard recruited by a bunch of big schools who are decomits from other schools.
......after having read a few, not all posts on the subject.

There is great danger in this statement.Originally posted by Solon View PostThat's true: I know what he is when I pick him up.
Junkie lives up to his name, that's for sure. He's got more stories, stats, insights, etc. than anyone and he saves me hours of doing my own research.
You are allowing an admitted BYU-lover/Ute-hater to frame your view of the issues.

9 of the top 13 kids this years probably would have gone to BYU regardless of whether or not KW made them a priority or not. (Which is assuming that you are accurate and that he "abandonded" them.)Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostKyle almost completely abandoned the State of Utah this year in recruiting they really focused heavily on Texas and California. 9 of the top 13 kids in the State of Utah are going to BYU. Utah picks up their 4th commit of the 2011 season.

He was the 3-A state wrestling champ. It's nice to have a lineman who can wrestle. Zane Taylor was a good wrestler in high school.
Here's a quote from Nielson's utezone article:
This sounds like a guy we won't see until 2013 at the earliest."They encourage a [Mormon] mission and that's one of my main reasons (for committing).""I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

We thank you for your concern. We're doing just fine thank you.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostThis is what I mean when I talk about decommits trickling down and having a domino effect. Utah is obviously struggling to fill their class. So they just offered Ofa Latu, a 180 pound linebacker from Timpview who commits immediately. Latu had zero D-1 offers before Utahs.
I am not sure this is the trickle down effect SU had in mind.
