[QUOTE=SeattleUte;262969 For a lot of reasons the ND is still a better job than USC. .[/QUOTE]

I completely disagree with this statement. Please look at academic requirements to get athletes into school and the location of the 2 universities and revise your statement please.

Peter King is reporting that Del Rio is staying in Jacksonville.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

A double please? SU is scary, but not that scary.

What about impending investigations/decisions from the NCAA? I wonder if that has to do with lack of interest from Peterson and/or others.

BTW, on Google News this thread was on the top when I searched for "USC Coaching Vacancy."

I wonder what google news picks up?

I'll give it a try. I heard that the USC Coaching Job is going to Barry Switzer.

I actually think that works to a new coach's benefit. Built-in excuse for underperformance over the next couple years.

All I know is that ND keeps landing blockbuster recruiting classes. I think ND has made a bunch of bad hires in a row, like USC did before Carroll. Like a lot of great programs have. If it gets the recruits your point about admissions classes is meaningless. Also, ND is near the East Coast and the Great Lakes. It's a considerably more wealthy school than USC, it has the biggest fan base in the nation. To many people USC is in the sticks. You're being provincial.

That's how Franchione used it at Alabama, isn't it? He way overachieved with the limitations on the program... Supposedly.

I have my doubts that Whit has "expressed interest" in the job if he knew he wasn't going to be on their short list. I could've seen Texas Tech or even USF making a run at him based on his name coming up for the UF job, but Whit knows the PR game a little better than to go float his name out there for a job if he's not even being considered by the school.

And what are these blockbuster recruiting classes doing for them? Nothing. I don't think it is all the coaching. They aren't bringing in athletes. Notre Dame is getting beat by other teams because they lack athletes to make plays. They aren't able to bring in the amount of athletes other big time schools can because of the academic requirements. I personally don't think Notre Dame can be Notre Dame again. When Lou Holtz was the head coach, he was allowed to get 2 kids every year into school that wouldn't have qualified at Notre Dame academically. Urban asked for one when he was offered the job and they turned him down so he turned them down. Notre Dame has had a good year here and there but haven't been a powerhouse since Dr. Lou left and they won't be because of the academic requirements.

It seems to me that one of the big factors in landing someone like a Peterson would be how much hot water USC is actually in regarding the potential violations that are being investigated. The longer the search goes the more I'd be wondering what these coaches know about the risk. USC is loaded with excellent players 3 deep at every position, who on earth wouldn't want to walk into that situation as a coach?

Exactly. No coach wants that job should the NCAA drop the hammer.

It always does. However, what I have seen on the field is a team that doesn't have the athletes they once did.

I say the same thing about BYU's recruiting list. They have been able to have the top recruiting class of the Non-BCS schools but they lack athletes. All opinion SU. I just don't think Notre Dame is what is used to be and unless they give on their academic standards for getting players into school they won't ever return to the top.

Again, USC should hire this guy.

Everyone is ignoring me. But he's a long time NFL head coach. Still young. Just a year ago he was hot enough for Paul Allen to hand pick him to succeed Mike Holmgren. It was no panic hire. He was brought in a year early and put on Holmegren's staff, when Holmgren was a lame duck. He had some good success at Atlanta. His NFL record looks just like Pete's, it's actually uncanny, except that in Atlanta he inherited a bad team, not a Super Bowl champion. He's a Pac 10 guy, and would have been Washington's choice over Sarkisian had he not been in line to succed Holmgren. He hardly got a chance with the Seahawks, which Holmgren left in a mess.
