Does this mean that you now recognize BYUs national championship in 1984? Because the argument is identical. They both have weaker strength of schedules than the 1 loss teams but they are the only undefeated teams out there.

Also, BYU actually held the #1 ranking going into the bowl season.

Its not identical due circumstances but very similar. If Utah being #1 means recognizing a byu team from 25 years ago then fine. btw I've already recognized that byu was voted #1 by the AP in 1984.

Ute Fans for so long have blaimed BYU for the BCS system. In a very perverse way it's interesting to see that BYU will also be the reason the Ute Quest for Perfection will not end in a MNC.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Likewise does that mean that byu fans need recognize Utah as the national champion this year? If you do then we will.

I think it was the UPI, no?

The Vault Book is coming in handy these days.

PS unfortunately, Utah was noted voted #1. BYU was voted #1. It is probably in your best interest to continue denying the 1984 championship.

I would not go as far as saying that the Utes should hold a piece of the National Championship...but I will say that the schedules between Utah and BYU of 1984 is laughable and you know it as well. Not every team that is undefeated deserves a share of the title (Ball State, Tulane and other teams have gone undefeated without playing anyone of real importance) but it once again points out the silliness of the BCS system.

The 2008-09 Utes have accomplished a lot mor than that BYU team did, and deserve it more. Under the old system Hawaii likely would have won the NC two years ago.

No, they are different. There were several different polls in 1984 that voted BYU #1, including UPI and AP. The country reached consensus.

Which was notorious. Utah has nothing but respect. Whatever Utah's ranking, no one will say it's undeserved. Quick, tell me, what were BYU's marquise wins in 1984 (note: Pitt=Michigan 2008)?

Let it go, it is just like self-flagellation at this point. This argument is simply de Sade.

All I would say is that there was not an effective method in 1984 for crowning a champion and there still isn't. I think when people say the Utes deserve a share, what they are saying is that our argument is as good as any, which is just another way of saying that it is completely subjective and that we will never know who is best under the current system. Not necessarily that we are the best team. I happen to believe that we are no worse than the 4th best team this year, however, and would compete with any of the three I put ahead of us.
