It appears they could be the Big 14 or Big 16. If there is any conference where 14 teams or 16 teams seems feasible The big10+1 is it. They have a nationally distributed tv channel. They have great contracts with ABC/espn. This would make the big 10 channel even more money."Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. btw... Big 10 adding two possibly 3 big east schools would put the MWC in autobid territory even if byu/utah/tcu left to go to the big 12"Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. The Big 10 Network is 51% owned by the Big 10. They must think increasing the area dominated by Big 10 teams increases subscriptions to the channel and the advertising revenue. Still, having 14 teams is A LOT and they'd better hope that they can increase the pot enough to make enough sense for them to expand to 14 as opposed to 12.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostIt appears they could be the Big 14 or Big 16. If they do expand to 14, there's no way they wouldn't pick up Missouri. Pitt is definitely gone and maybe Syracuse as well. I just don't buy Rutgers having a presence in the NYC metro area.
The only other conference with enough of a TV presence to expand beyond 12 teams is the SEC. I'm not sure where they're at as far a TV network. I'm also not sure about their options for expansion. TCU would make sense and SEC football in Dallas would be a big deal. As for the eastern side of the conference, maybe they'd be willing to go a bit farther north and grab West Virginia.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I think the old WAC demonstrated that leagues bigger that 12 teams doesn't work.
I think the only reason 12 works is the added championship game.
I have a hard time believing that an established league like the Big 10 is considering this. This would be a radical change. They must be seeing huge $$$$ with the TV network in their estimates to be considering this.

well...actually the old WAC demonstrated that 16 team conferences made up of mostly crappy schools does not work. I don't know what it says for a BIG 14. I don't see the old WAC and the new BIG 14 as anywhere near comparable.Originally posted by beefytee View PostI think the old WAC demonstrated that leagues bigger that 12 teams doesn't work.

The interesting thing about what the Big 10 is potentially doing is the effect it could have on the SEC. Does the SEC try to keep up with the Big 10? It really comes down to whether the SEC has its own network, and I really have no idea where its at on that. It potentially makes sense for the Big 10 to expand beyond the minimum number of teams necessary to have a conference championship game (IIRC it's an NCAA rule that the conference have at least 12 teams to have a conference championship football game), when you consider that they're the majority owner of its own TV network. Usually, I don't know if the addition of three teams like Missouri, Pitt and Rutgers/Syracuse would demand enough money from ESPN/ABC to justify the inclusion of them. However, with a conference-owned TV network, they could get enough additional subscriptions from those areas to make enough money. I think with more teams in the conference, comes more games available to the Big 10 network and it would push many cable/satellite companies to add the network to their offerings.Originally posted by Flystripper View Postwell...actually the old WAC demonstrated that 16 team conferences made up of mostly crappy schools does not work. The SEC Network is a syndication package featuring college football and basketball events from the Southeastern Conference. The package is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television and is expected to be shown in more than 50 percent of households in the United States before its first broadcast.[1] The SEC Network will air in the noon eastern slot that was former home to the Raycom Sports SEC game of the week. Games are shown locally on broadcast stations and nationally (via satellite) on regional sports networks Fox Sports Detroit, Comcast SportsNet California, Comcast SportsNet Washington, and MSG Network, [2] as well as on Out-of-Market Sports Packages ESPN GamePlan and ESPN Full Court."Be a philosopher. Does the Big East have a similar agreement?
I remember seeing the UConn - Rutgers game on Altitude Sports and I believe it said Big East Network, but was the branding of the ESPN+ in all but name.

This is going to have to happen sooner or later ... or the conferences with a championship will take their BCS ball and go home. USC has always had an easier path to the BCS due to the lack of a conference championship. Same thing in the Big 10."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."
