Tell me, can you see me rolling my eyes from there?
Not from behind that mask with pointy ears.
The old SWC was totally broken. TTU sucked. Baylor sucked. Rice sucked. TCU sucked. SMU...we all know about that.
Arkansas had bolted a few years earlier.
The powerhouses of the SWC wanted a clean break. The prevailing view was that BYU would be a great geographic match with the Buffs and BYU was still considered a national powerhouse at the time.
I have no idea whether TCU was seriously considered but it would be stunning. Pat Sullivan pulled a rabbit out of the hat a few years before by winning the SWC but TCU had largely been one of the most consistently mediocre teams in the SWC and it was not of interest to the Big 8.
Again, I profess very little knowledge or inside scoop on almost all topics, especially BYU football. This is one of the rare cases where I found out the scoop ex post facto

oh, dear. That's a lot of typing.
We've been through all this before, several times. You can use the search feature to pull up the threads. The original documents indicate that it was TCU that was to be included before Ann switched out in favor of Baylor. There were quite a few mentions of BYU after the fact, though, in reference to a potential two-team expansion to create a "Big 14."

the "original documents"? link por favor.
it really makes no sense that TCU would have gone. Less sense than Baylor, which is a very important school given the dominance of the so baptist contingent of the texas ol' boys club.

donny, you're out of your element.
you can look up the threads. Search for Ann Richards. Might be on CG, though.

CG? Message boards? As I recall even the BYU to Big 8 expansion was reported by the Dallas Morning News and other news outlets at the time...it was not a well-kept secret and in fact this is so established it's almost comical for me to call it inside information on second thought...
I don't doubt that TCU was thoroughly discussed, but it makes little sense in light of the strategic opportunity to pair Colo with BYU. It would really surprise me if TCU was ever ahead of BYU in the discussions. It is a stunner that people forget how horrible a football program TCU was pre-Franchione and the current dude for decades
The four other SWC schools — SMU, TCU, Rice and Houston, all based in metropolitan communities — found few advocates for their interests.
The fate of the three private schools in the group — SMU, TCU and Rice — was of little concern to the decision-makers in Austin.
SMU, TCU and Rice were private schools, and big conferences desire schools backed by state coffers. Houston, TCU and SMU still bore the stain of NCAA probation.
Gee, sounds like Babs nailed this one. TCU looks like they just barely got edged out at the last moment. Shocker, that TCU being excluded. What consistency they've exhibited throughout the ages
