  • My thoughts:

TCU didn't play their best game, and I'm convinced if they played 10 times, TCU would win the majority.

Boise's better than I thought. They're a legit top 10 team. Also, they're the most well coached team in big games I've ever noticed.

Boise's a must have for the MWC. Don't got to 12 with two divisions but grab them ASAP.

I will continue to say this over and over....

BSU accepts Prop 48 players. If BSU comes into the MWC, they can no longer accept Prop 48 players. This means that their talent level will drop significantly.

I am not opposed to adding them, just understand that they will become a shell of their former selves.

This is also why Fresno St. is a stupid option.

MWC disallowing Prop 48 kids is the dumbest thing they ever did. Maybe adding BSU to the conference would make a good time to reverse that decision.

That may be...but it is their way of trying to establish something "special". Some BS like "all of our athletes are student-athletes".

But BSU to the MWC just isn't going to happen. It would be stupid on BSU's part.

And if they did join the MWC, I don't think you see an undefeated team come out of the MWC in a long time. So we would have to become an AQ conference or we will never have any one record worthy to go.

Yes. We should also note that LSU beat Knute Rockne's Fighting Irish and the Four Horsemen in the SUG the previous year.

Boise State, TCU, and BYU all would have been BCS teams this year with one loss. It's not going to be required any longer for non-BCS to be undefeated to make the BCS (unless they're competing with themselves).

                  • Back to the game itself... I thought TCU erred when they elected to receive to start the game. Given the noise and pre-game jitters, why not put your strength on the field first, get folks settled down, and send in the O after a nice defensive stop? Throwing Opie onto the field to start seemed like a bad idea.

BSU deserved to win for several reasons, but calling The Riddler from their own 30 late in the game reflected Huevos Grande and capped a great night for the coaching staff.

As long as we are an AQ conference I agree.

If we stay non-AQ, then with a 1 loss team no MWC team would have been in a BCS game.

I really think by adding Boise, the BCS would be forced to add us.

But even if they didn't, you still have the top 12 rule. How is Boise, TCU, and BYU all out of the top 12 with one loss?

Still undecided on that call. You just don't call a fake punt on your own 30. If it had gone badly--and it had all kinds of potential to do so--that single call would lose the game, and you're a dumb coach who relies on trick plays to beat anyone of quality. It went well and they won, so I guess you hand it to him.

Still--I'm not that convinced that that play won the game for them. They still had to drive 50 yards to score (which they might have done on the next series anyway). So, a little upside with huge potential downside.

I think great calls/decisions shouldn't have to benefit from hindsight to be considered great, and this is one of those calls.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I didn't know this. What do the other major conferences do with Prop 48?

It's an interesting point. Certainly, if the pass falls incomplete or worse (pick, sack, etc.), TCU is already in FG position and would almost certainly score, and Peterson looks like Crowton. But the play was superbly executed, and the gamble required considerable skill as well as good fortune, so I have mixed feelings about the call.

After that play, TCU seemed deflated a bit, and I believe BSU's only TD drive of the night was due in part to the Frogs having taken a punch to the gut on that trickery.
