I sense some here are a bit confused as to how many Ute fans feel about the Max Hall comments. Many, like myself, do not feel upset or offended; quite the contrary. Here is my story. I think LA Ute and others might have a similar tale, but I don't want to speak for them. I recognize that each persons experience with hearing Max's rant is deeply personal and unique
I live out of state, but I was in town for the holiday and at the game with my dad. My dad and I had been so excited when the Utes came back, only to have our hearts ripped out. We slowly filed out of the stadium and trudged a few block back to our car. We were broken, drained, dejected. We didn't say much and I can't remember what it was we did say. Finally, we got to our car and began the slow journey home through thick traffic. The radio was tuned to KALL 700 and everything there just mirrored our mood. The players and coaches they interviewed, the announcers, the callers, everyone sounded the same. Everyone seemed resolved to our fate of enduring another year listening to some sort of inane "Harline is still open" or "4th and 18" smack talk.
Suddenly, a new Ute caller was on the air. His excitement was palpable. He sounded so upbeat, so alive. Our ears picked up. What had calmed this fellow Ute's troubled soul? The caller asked: Had anyone heard what Max Hall had said? No, no, we had not, but soon the sound bite was pulled up and I first heard those petty, spiteful, magical words that I have come to love.
When Max's little tirade had ended I had an Enos moment; my grief was swept away. My dad and I started laughing for the first time since the game. "What a stupid thing to say!" we laughed. "He does know he won, doesn't he?" we wondered. "What a petty, whinny little girl!" we said as we sat in traffic. I grew closer to my dad last Saturday. Spirits were uplifted, bonds were formed, a family was strengthened. Max Hall's words washed over me like a Balm of Gilead that night, soothing my broken heart.
But the mystical properties of Max Hall's words did not dissipate that night. On the contrary, they grew stronger over the coming days. No phone messages or texts from the Cougar faithful rubbing in the loss. No emails with photoshopped pictures of a winged Andrew George trotting into the end zone. It was all strangely silent. When I arrived back in Colorado, the first thing my BYU graduate friend said was "Can you believe that Max Hall? What an idiot!" No gloating or teasing, my poor friend was genuinely embarrassed. I still have yet to hear anything from my other Y friends about the game. This in and of itself I consider a miracle.
And then there is CUF. Let me just say that I would much rather talk about Max Hall than the events of the game. I appreciate all you Y fans who are so willing to oblige. Instead of just saying, "Yeah that was a dumb thing to say. How about that awful missed tackle at the end of the game," There seems to be a need deep inside many of you to justify, downplay or deflect the great words of Brother Hall. I don't know if this makes you feel better, but I can assure you that it makes many of us Utes feel better and for this we thank you."In conclusion, let me give a shout-out to dirty sex. It was almost worth the loss in order to have Max go off. It's like I won when I lost.Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."

Col. Klink: "I didn't mean you sir, you're not clever."

How about having our QB promise to go off on the U after every game, in exchange for the U going Washington Generals on us each year? In return, future QBs can expand a bit on the far too terse "I hate the whole university...." For example, future post-game commentary can include, "I loathe the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy, and can't stand the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and don't get me started on the College of Mines and Earth Sciences...."Originally posted by USS Utah View PostIt was almost worth the loss in order to have Max go off. We're well on our way toward the halcyon days of nine wins out of ten from the 70s and 80s. With your willingness help in that effort, I'm sure Max's successor will be happy to oblige.

I would still much rather have the W, but this really does help.Originally posted by creekster View Postso you guys see little difference between beating BYU and losing to BYU as long as BYU says they hate you? PAC actually did say something close to that. I don't know of a single other BYU fan here who has.Originally posted by DU Ute View PostInstead of just saying, "Yeah that was a dumb thing to say. . . . " There seems to be a need deep inside many of you to justify, downplay or deflect . . . .
By the way, I was embarrassed by Scalley's comment a few years ago and am glad he had the guts to make an unreserved apology.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.
