If I were calling the game I would have done it just to watch the place go nuts. For the sheer pleasure of it. I'd spot the ball way back on the 40. Then the first lip I got it'd be back on the BYU 45, and so on.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

The only sad part about Max's tirade is that he isn't old enough to know better. Everyone knows that the best way to truly rip the heart out of your opponent after a last second win is praise their efforts and mention that you were lucky at the end. If I were Hall, I would have said, "I'm just really surprised that we have beaten Utah two of the three years I played here and this is the best their program has ever been. Speaks volumes."
As Hall grows older he will learn to truly damage the other team post game. Right now he is young and goes the route of all young men.

The rest of the officials would ignore you, as they would follow the rules. The crowd, knowing the rules, woudl still be running on the field. But I must admit the sight of you in a striped shirt blowing a whistle untl your lips fell off all while being pushed and jostled by exuberant BYU fans woudl be worth the Ticketmaster convenience fee to see.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostIf I were calling the game I would have done it just to watch the place go nuts. I like the way BJ did it last year. His legacy is a bright and shining one because he did his talking through his play on the field and played his best football against his toughest opponents in big games. He has a record of class and excellence both on and off the field. No one needs to make any excuses for him. I like that. My guess is that many BYU fans secretly wish they had the same thing.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostThe only sad part about Max's tirade is that he isn't old enough to know better. But there is no use to providing locker room material. That being said, I tend to agree. It is pretty weak to say it after you win.

Your "sharp words" were to point out that she wouldn't know how hard it must be to lose? I wouldn't know how to respond to that, either, without laughing.Originally posted by USS Utah View PostI do recall a rather annoying BYU fan in 1986, but nobody harassed her or anything. One person politely asked her to desist in the 4th quarter and she patronizingly said it must be hard to lose. At which point the only sharp words I have ever heard spoken to a BYU fan in the old Rice Stadium or the new RES, escaped my lips. I shot back "how would you know?!" At least it shut her up.
Derik Stevenson (my wife's cousin) - I think it was in 1996 - the drunk Ute fan physically assaulted Derik's parents - Derik beat the crap out of him - put him in the hospital - the whole thing was caught by a Des. News photographer - I believe the Ute fan was charged for the incident - Derik wasn't.Originally posted by USS Utah View PostI vaguely remember a commotion over in the visitor fan section in 1998 as one drunk Ute fan got into it with a relative of a BYU player. Again, I thought it was just an isolated incident. I wasn't in that section, but I think I saw that some commotion was going on and then later read about it in the paper. If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

Actually, I very much think it is worth talking about, especially when BYU fans try to turn "Max's moment" into something admirable or positive.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Heaven help me, I enjoy discussions like this. I like being the contrarian in a room that is otherwise an echo chamber.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostWow, I never would have guessed. SO, when you said this:Originally posted by LA Ute View PostCan't . . . let . . . foolish statements . . . by . . . BYU fans . . . go . . . unanswered . . . .

http://www.cougaruteforum.com/showpo...&postcount=197It still was a terrific game, and both teams played their hearts out. No, neither team racked up great stats, but that's what happens when two evenly-matched teams play their hearts out. BYU still deserves congratulations because they did what was necessary to win and Utah did not. So good for them.
And I am now done talking about Max Hall's rant.
You really meant:

I am beginning to see why you and SU are such good buddies.PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Fair point. I can only say that I am easily coaxed out of "retirement" on the subject by posts from people here who I think know better, but nevertheless are not only unwilling to criticize Max, but insist on praising him for what he said. It offends the equilibrium of my universe.Last edited by LA Ute; 12-04-2009, 05:06 PM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Yes, I can see the humor in accusing her of being a spoiled brat -- spoiled by a then 7 game winning streak over her rival, and well on the way to number 8.Your "sharp words" were to point out that she wouldn't know how hard it must be to lose? I wouldn't know how to respond to that, either, without laughing.
Forgive me, I was only 17.
I was pretty sure it was in the new stadium, which would mean 1998. Additionally, I (mercifully) missed the 1996 game.Derik Stevenson (my wife's cousin) - I think it was in 1996 -Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."

They used to sell alcohol up at RES? Really? Until when? When did they quit selling it?Originally posted by Shaka View PostI have been going to the BYU Utah games since 1982. I was fortunate my dad's employer had season tickets right in the middle of the Crimson Clubbers which we would take when BYU played up at Rice. I've personally witnessed all the behaviour cliches associated with this rivarly multiple times.
I can state that the rivalry has been a bitter one all the way back to when I started attending the games. In fact it seems to me that it has become less bitter with age. I also noticed a difference when they quit selling alcohol up at RES. Yes, there is still plenty of booze smuggled in but as a whole there is not as much as there used to be.
