Max's story has been corroborated. There's nothing to argue there. The only discussion on the matter is whether he should or should not have said anything in the first place. (The answer to that is obvious: he should not have. But BOY am I glad he did. Just when you thought the rivalry couldn't get more entertaining . . . Awesome.)

Since the real shame of the statement was the distraction from a very, very good game, I feel like it is necessary to try to shift that balance:

RED HERRING. I know of no evidence they had anything thrown or spit at them or any physical abuse. I'm sure there are eye witnesses and no one has reported seeing anything of the kind. It looks like Max is lying, it's that simple.

Why do Ute fans think the whole beer thing is implausible? There is alcohol in RES. I know, I've seen it and smelled it both times I've attended games there. During the 2002 game my section I was sitting in smelled like a brewery. I don't care if they sell it or not, it is there. That's like saying they don't have PB&J sandwiches in LES. People sneak things in to the stadium.

Who cares if it is beer or not. It is a disgusting act to dump any type of liquid on anyone unless you are the winning coach then by all means expect to have gatorade dumped on your head.

It gets better when the evidence leads them no room but to start to mesh together their sad tales of woe of how they or the team was abused in either stadium by the fans of the BYU!

This is a pretty original tit for tat.

Step 1: BYU fans accusation of Ute fan boorish behavior.
Step 2: Ute fans claim BYU fans lie.
Step 3: Brighter Ute fans put together "lawyerly" (Thank Judge Chamberlin Herman Munster) arguments about who, what, where and why.
Step 4: Evidence, hard and concrete and highly believable, begins to add up that in fact Ute fans can behave boorishly.
Step 5: Ute fans point out that there was some small discrepancy in the complaint. i.e. It was obviously Schlitz as no self respecting Ute will drink Old Milwaukee.
Step 6: Ute fans will then claim it wasn't thaaat bad.
Step 7: Ute fans recount their tales of horror in LES and by damn Ute fans are no different than Cougar fans!

Saying all that I still think Max should have said nothing. But if he was going to say something it should have been more focussed on whom he wanted to taunt and more arrogant in substance. If he took that road he would still have been classless and gottent a lot of attention but his words would have hit his target deep and burned into their souls at a higher level.

I also think he should have completed a higher percentage of his passes. I think the matchups just favored BYU this year. I don't know if BYU fans should be worried that BYU needed to generate a victory over a freshman qb led Utah club with help from an interception and a spectacular special teams return, or if Utah fans should be worried that BYU is putting together a decent enough entire team that the Cougars can beat Utah when the BYU QB can only complete 33% of his passes. The next few years will tell the tale, I reckon.
