I just think it's dumb to argue about which team's fans are better or that when or how someone became a fan has anything at all to do with the quality of football (or basketball, or baseball, or bocce ball) that is being played. Junkie started this thread just to push people's buttons. Lame.
Especially because we know that :byu1: fans are the most .

I believe this was taken just after a Young Men gathering at Sundance. Notice the Honor Code-compliant haircut:

I am curious as to what people think on here. Is the obsession to pat oneself on the back for being "true", a mormon BYU fan thing or is it pretty typical with fandom everywhere. Pointing to others and indicating "I" am more "true" than you.
It is curious that such feelings come from a culture that encourages others to break with their allegiences and change.
Im not sure about being true. I am talking about being a bandwagon fan. You can be a bandwagon fan and still really like the team, I suppose (be "true)".
Some here have admitted to switching allegiances between rivals after the one program starts getting good....not before.
I am pretty sure that sort of behavior is frowned upon in any sports culture. Bandwagon fans are part of sports, I guess, so to that extent, they play a necessary role in the sports food chain (much like parasites).
Actually, I would think this is not unique to Mormon sports at all.

Hey, you're the dude that's supposed to be taking care of the Young Men. Who planned that activity anyway?
I just noticed that in addition to the 4 polos, the dude also has a green t-shirt on. 5 layers!
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I am dating myself here but the Young Men was a service club (the BYU equivalent of a frat) at the Y when I was young.

Maybe after being a devoted fan of the Cougars for 35 years, the very hint of being called a bandwaggoner feels like an effort to kick me in the nuts.
Actually, I don't care much after the initial attempt.
I certainly got on board due to BYU getting good. If they had stayed the way they were in the 50's and 60's I doubt I ever would have been a fan. Actually, if I went with my heart I would be pulling for the Aggies, but I am a value guy.
That's why given a chance to look at a photo spread of a 60 year old ex heartthrob or one of the current lookers, my heart would say be true to the heartthrobs you knew as a kid, my brain would pick the current looker.

I didn't think you were bandwagon fan. Are you? I always assumed you were a BYU fan, not a Utah fan.
Of course, today seems to be a day of shocking revelation across the board. You can never be quite sure about another, it seems.

If you describe someone as a bandwaggon fan by being someone who didn't remain loyal, well then yea I guess I am a bandwaggoner. My teenage years and college years, my football loyalty went to USU, Utah and BYU in that order. BB, Utah, USU and BYU in that order, but they were very close.
Schools I liked. USU Utah BYU.
Of course my allegience to BYU after having bandwaggoned on in the early 70's has brought me to prefer BYU over the other two. It is now BYU Utah USU, school wise. Sports wise BYU Utah, USU. Except for rivalry week, I don't have this hate thing for Utah.
I guess that is why if BYU becomes a ultra conservative fortification and slides in athletic prowess, I don't think it would be too hard for me to find a place more suitable to my beliefs.

so you liked BYU when BYU stunk?
If you switch to from the U to a crappy BYU team in the early 70s, how can you be a bandwagon fan? By definition there is no bandwagon.
If you switch from the U to BYU once they are dominating the WAC in the 80s, then yes....that is being a bandwagon fan.
35 years later and you have been adopted into the fold, but your roots are tainted a bit by the stain, I suppose.
Point of clarification: The Fiesta Bowl wasn't played on New Year's day then, was it.
It was a brand new bowl game as I recall. That's the only way a 7-4 WAC team would have been in it.
