You know how cheap BYU is right? I was at the Y while my sisters were at the U. Our tuition payments were very close.

My unscientific opinion is that of guys 30-40 who grew up in Utah, at least half were BYU fans at one point.

I base this off of friends from my home ward and high school who I've reconnected with via facebook. The vast majority of them were BYU fans growing up and most now seem to be ute fans given all the ute facebook groups they belong to.

Count me as a lifelong Ute fan. Growing up in the 80's I was one of the few in the stands at Rice stadium, and one of the many in the seats of the Special Events Center.

I was the only Ute fan my age in my ward and elemetary school. I lost a lot of sprite's making bets with my friends on the Utah/BYU football games that decade.

For those same 30 to 40 year-olds, BYU was winning like crazy during their youth. They were the best college show in town, and lots of people enjoyed watching them and became fans. These same dudes later went to school at the U and football doesn't really factor into education choices. Later still, the Utes start winning, and these guys start making the change. They've got the undergrad foundation to rely on as well. The Utes go to the Fiesta Bowl, and tons of those who were cougar supporters in their youth become die-hard Ute fans. The Sugar Bowl pours gas on the fire.

Is it really? We have learned that UtahDan, SU, DU, and LA have all been BYU fans at one time or another. What a dumb question to ask.

I have always been a U fan above all else, I just didn't hate the Y until I grew up.

Which brings up another interesting question.

What portion of the BYU fan base is there because of how good the program is and has been from a purely football perspective.

What portion of the BYU fan base is there because of the "mission statement"of BYU and their love for BYU.

My contention has been and will be, both bases are needed. To tell one base or the other to take a hike reminds me of the Limbaugh, Hannity and Becks of the world.

My parents were not in much position to give us any support, and they discouraged us from working in high school so that we could have fun and concentrate on school.


I went to CEU for 2 years basically for free (full ride, living at home), went to SUU for 2 years at 1/3 the price of UU or BYU(3/4 ride academic so basically cost of living was it). I finished 4 years of school with $2000.00 student loan debt. I then went to Med school at the U and discovered what real student debt was all about.

Went to every home game with my dad as far back as I can remember.
Never rooted for the byu. Ever. Even when my seminary teacher said that a 1984 bowl win would greatly help out the missionary efforts around the world.

I didn't turn down a scholarship to BYU, they had no interest in giving me a scholarship.
