3 points, with no reported injuries or other extenuating circumstances, just from squares? That wasn't meant to sound sarcastic- you know more about this stuff than I do. I just read and study lines, because I find the science and psychological aspect fascinating. You risk your own $. So I'm making my statements as an outsider who has read several books and countless articles, you've been in the foxhole.

Chad Millman on Espn insider should have something about it (he does a blog entry on large line moves in college and the pros). Its very possible the sharps were all over the 6.5 line.

Depends on the book. If you are looking at Harah's or one of the big places it can be a large amount of money or other factors. At some of the smaller places it doesn't take as much to move a line.

I am not necessarily bragging, but I made a bet that caused the line to move once. It didn't work out so well for me, at least my room was comped though!

Proving the point it isn't the amount as much as who. They see a man walking in wearing a pimp suit, droppin' serious coin, it's time to recognize.

In the last 10 years, BYU has only beaten the spread 4 times and 3 of those were losses (one of which the mighty Cougs scored exactly zero points). BYU has been the favorite and covered exactly one time 2007. I personally think the line is too high this year (BYU -7.5). I will be shocked if BYU wins by more than a touchdown.

All lines are from the BYU perspective a minus number means they were favored, a plus number means they were underdogs.

            2012: -4.0....
2011: -4.0.... 10-54 - Loss, and not in the freaking vicinity of a cover.
            2010: +9.0.....16-17- Loss but covered
2009: -7.5.....26-23 Win but no cover
            2008: +6.5.....24-48 - Loss and no cover
2007: -4.5 ....17-10 - Only game they win and cover in over a decade.
            2006: -10.5....33-31 - Win but no cover
            2005: -10 .....34-41- Loss and no cover
            2004:+18.5....21-52- Loss and no cover
2003: +8 ......0-3 - The worst cover in the history of betting!
            2002: +7.5.....6-13 - Loss but covered
            2001: -5.5 .....24-21 - Win but no cover
This is turning into one of my least favorite threads. Utah covering seems to be one of the safest bets around.

I'm not liking that this year line is the exact same as last years.

I second your CUFfie nomination for worst thread ever.

I was surprised to see that BYU has been favored in 7 of the last 10 meetings. I was not surprised to be reminded their record is 3-6. It has been requested I look at how Utah did the week prior, to see what effect, if any, on their performance. I will try and look that up, when I have some time.

Unfortunately, the main take away, is Utah consistently out performs (Vegas') expectations, and BYU consistently underperforms (everyone's) expectations.

BYU -4, you get that they have to win by 5 to cover, right? You can't be favored and lose and cover.

I'm not sure why I wrote they covered I'll blame it on my mind being preoccupied with who the ricin caplet could possibly be for.

Put a spoiler on that, yo! Some of us haven't watched it.

So 3 covers in the last 12 years. I'm not a big what's the history ATS, because I think each year is independent that's a stat that will make the message board on Covers.com.

On my betting site BYU is featured on one of the banner ads.
