Alumni with unrealistic expectations. Check.
School BoD hamstrings the football program with crazy restrictions: check.
The only difference is the restrictions. In the case of BYU, the BoD wants all of this touchy feely church stuff to take precedent over football (at least in appearance, anyway). At Notre Dame, the school is always going to play a killer schedule. Haters can say what they will about the school and its Domer Thumper fanbase, but nobody can diss Notre Dame for playing a horrible schedule. In any given year....yes, Stanford or Michigan may be weak....but pretty much every year they play SC, Michigan, Michigan State, and a handful of other great schools. The basically play a mini P10 and B10 schedule, with a service academy thrown in. It is always a really nice schedule, year in and year out.
That model doesn't work anymore. And the Irish are paying the price. Until they adopt a new scheduling mentality, any coach that goes in there will wilt under the pressure and unrealistic expectations. And yes, I am aware that they play UConn this year, but they will always schedule a few gimmes in there. The other 8-10 games are generally "respectable" at worst. Often they are fantastic teams with great tradition.
The Irish, much like BYU, needs to get real.
