I think Bronco could have more success elsewhere. His hands are tied by the HC (combined with the actual enforcement of the HC). For selfish reasons, I want Bronco to stay, but he could excel at a number of different programs around the country.

Unless his personality is a complete invention, I honestly don't think Bronco can have more success elsewhere. He would get eaten alive in a big time program where football is first and nobody cares whether your middle linebacker is an Eagle Scout.

I can't imagine how much a frustration the Bronco front (and I do think it's partially a front) must be to non-LDS BYU fans. Heck, he drives us Mormons crazy some times.

To bring it back to the comparison...
I'm frustrated at the potential that's being wasted. Bronco is an absolute stud for his age and I would think that kind of thing would be inspiring to college athletes. I would love to see Kyle drag his fat butt up to the Y. How would it be to be coached by a fiery guy who could flatten you if he wanted to?

I was agreeing with Brian in that I think a lot of the fireside stuff is a show to appease both the bosses and the fans. I don't think Bronco would do that at another program.

Just to avoid a potential thread diversion, I was more interested in comparing/contrasting Bronco and Kyle than a scrutiny of just one or the other.

Bronco--I think he is the perfect coach for BYU. His focus is on living the standards of the church. I think that even if he was 7-5 or 8-4 every year, the would stay on as coach unless the boosters just pushed too much. I think his greatest asset is that he is methodical and stays the course. This can be a good thing when you are really good because you don't over-react to mistakes or tough losses. Its a bad thing when you are not willing to adjust when the wheels come off once in a while. I also think he expects a lot of his players which is a good thing. I don't think you will ever see a 13-0 team out of him, but I don't think you will ever see a 4-8 season out of him as he is just too steady.

Kyle--A ton of emotion. That is a good thing when you are trying to get up for a bigtime team and the players rally around that and perform...but it is a bad thing because the players sometime don't get up for lesser opponents because they have heard it before from Kyle. Trusts his assistants but will step in their world when needed...I get the sense that during the season, he lets his assistants do their thing...but for big games, I think he is more hands on.

Anyway, I think both are very good coaches...and I wouldn't be surprised to see them still at their schools in 10 years.

Not necessarily. I don't really think he'd go to even a Colorado or a Washington. But if ND or Texas or USC or like school came calling...I'd be surprised if he stayed. He's a great coach who has built this program ground up. (I think the only reason Majerus stayed is that, because of his quirks, he never got an offer from a truly top echelon program.) Maybe he'd go pro too.

I really can see Whittingham as a professional coach. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a shot in the NFL if Utah continues to win. Defense wins on all levels and that is what Whittingham knows best.

Personally, I think that should the right offer come he'd seriously consider leaving. I do think that he loves the U of U (and he is treated like a king there), but if the pursuing program was big enough (a Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Penn State, etc.) the U could lose him. I think that he'd need a few more years of strong showings before he'd get seriously considered though.

Right now the marquee programs that could have legitimate job openings in the foreseeable future:

Florida State
Penn State
Notre Dame

Texas, Florida, SC, Oklahoma....those schools aren't looking to replace their coaches, there is no coaching controversy, and those coaches aren't going anywhere.

Wouldn't it be wild if Kyle went off to Florida State, with Urban down the road in Gainesville? The U sending off all these coaches to the State of Florida.

I don't see Bronco fielding any great offers right now. If Bronco were to receive an offer, it would be a small step-up (BCS conference), but a lower rung school within that conferece.......maybe an Arizona or Iowa State type school. No football powerhouse....even an also-ran like Washington, would look at Bronco right now. And I like Washington. I am just saying that at one time, they were the shiz and still retain that Husky Pride. Schools that are currently struggling but were once players (Texas A&M, Nebraska, Washington, etc...) will want a bigger name than Bronco.

Kyle would be a great fit for ND. Family man, church goer, spotless record in terms of ethics, etc. His dad's family is from back there.
