You are not alone. I think Bronco is getting a bad rap right now. He is totally hamstrung by the church/school in who he can recruit and how he can run his program. It sounds like he's a totally different coach than he was at New Mexico.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI don't see Bronco fielding any great offers right now. If Bronco were to receive an offer, it would be a small step-up (BCS conference), but a lower rung school within that conferece.......maybe an Arizona or Iowa State type school. No football powerhouse....even an also-ran like Washington, would look at Bronco right now. And I like Washington. I am just saying that at one time, they were the shiz and still retain that Husky Pride. Schools that are currently struggling but were once players (Texas A&M, Nebraska, Washington, etc...) will want a bigger name than Bronco.
The question is this: How long will the season ticket holders and big time boosters be happy with 10 win seasons and trips to Las Vegas/San Diego/Ft. Worth/ABQ? Bronco's job is secure as long as the tickets sell and the boosters donate. Pretty cushy gig actually.

Saying that, I really like Bronco but I don't believe that BYU should be beaten that badly by TCU two years in a row. Even if TCU goes to a BCS bowl and finishes in the top 5. I also agree with the sentiment I heard from the players that TCU speed was not the reason for the implosion. If I were to criticize Bronco it would be that I don't think he really anticipates well the limitations in his players. BYU is rarely going to have better athletes than TCU across the board. On occassion the Y might have some OLBs like Nixon and Kehl in the same year, but that is rare. I actually think this BYU defense is about average for BYU. Some years there will be more talent and some years less. But, Mendenhall and or his staff need to do a better job at genuinely idenitfying the limitations of its players and better scheming to cover those limitations.
I also think the fanbase needs to find some emotional balance. TCU kicked BYU's ass and BYU played poorly, but I am not convinced it indicates that BYU will never ever be able to compete with TCU again. I think it indicates that some aspects of the program need changing and improvement but the recruiting is fine and the systems are fine.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I think or at least hope that the LB's will be upgraded over the next couple of years. To me that is the most glaring weakness. Yes the defense could be more aggressive, but there's not a whole lot you can do with untalented. Those guys are either not putting in the extra time or they have reason to be on the field as Div. 1 athlete. Some of those guys have the biggest case of relief society arms I have ever seen on a D-1 athlete.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI also think the fanbase needs to find some emotional balance. This game was more about brainpower than brawn. TCU beat BYU by worse than it did SMU at home (SMU is Wazu's only win); it beat Air Force by 3 points. BYU was totally psyched out. I think there is some better talent on the horizon for the LBs, but I also am in the minority who thinks that the backfield on defense is probably better than many I have seen at BYU.Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostI think or at least hope that the LB's will be upgraded over the next couple of years. The real issue, IMO, on Saturday was the offense. TCU's defense is good, damnfreaking good as a matter of fact, but BYU's offense with this much returning talent should be able to score 24-28 points in a game of that magnitude in Provo. I think that the culpability for that issue starts with the coaching staff. I don't accept that it was entirely due to TCU having faster athletes. I have watched BYU football for years and BYU offenses have put points on the board routinely against more athletic defenses. I can accept bad games and realize those will happen, but two horrendous performances like that in back to back years leads me to believe the coaching staff overestimates what some of its players can do. I personally believe that it can get better but in the end it might be more of an art than anything else.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Agree or disagree? BYU has far more players on the team that have other major things going on in their lives. How often when you hear a kid interviewed at another school does he mention he is worried he isn't married yet. How many of them hear their coach mention he is dissapointed they didn't show up at a fireside the night before a game.
We applaud the other things they are doing in their lives. Yes, if you are married and have a kid, they are far more important than a football game.
On the other hand, how many company executives do you know who tell their employees over and over again, firesides, your family, community service, church attendance is more important than your performance here at work. In maybe Robin Finderson's world, those would be awesome companies, in the real world the company would have people who perform great in life, but not for the company.
I can imagine BYU players in a game getting hammered and thinking, football isn't that important.
Maybe a silly example, but when I am playing with friends for the fun of it, I laugh when I play crappy. When I am playing with friends or advesaries and money is on the line, I focus even harder if I am struggling.

I think this is less of an issue than many make it out to be. The cultural aspects have advantages and disadvantages for college football. I find this to be akin to excuse making. IMO the BYU football program offers enough advantages that it should not get embarassed by TCU in back to back years. I think the issue is that the BYU coaches were embarassed by the TCU coaches. Enough that I think there is legitimate reason for concern. I believe the coaching staff is similarly concerned and time will tell if they have the God given coaching talent to rectify an alarming trend. However, the fact that BYU kids don't believe football is the end all of life is your mormon culture seeking to assure yourself our people are better.Originally posted by byu71 View PostAgree or disagree? Tell me which team had about 1/3 of their players praying in the south endzone before the start of the first and second halves? Others have priorities and other objectives in life.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Well yea, I have said all along the other schools probably have priorities in place over football, but they just don't seem to have the need to tell everyone over and over again they do.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostTell me which team had about 1/3 of their players praying in the south endzone before the start of the first and second halves? At BYU we want everyone to know, we are better than you are and here is why. Perhaps it is part of the missionary spirit.
