I heard on the radio today that some guy at the beginning of the season put $250 on the Cardinals to win it all. He was given 999 to 1 odds. $250,000 if the cards can pull it off tonight.

Grantland had an article a week ago about a guy who put $20 (payout 6k) on the cardinals in september when they were 4.5 games out. Then they gave him the most optimal hedge. Whoever the guy you are referencing I would like to read how he hedged. How does one come up with 100k in a couple days?

Apparently the casino that gave him those odds came out and said a huge mistake was made somewhere.

Collie's comment about magic happens is a lot like Lennon's about Jesus compared to the Beatles--commonly taken out of context and distorted. Were Collie a buddhist the comment would have been interpreted as a truism about how karma works, karma really just being practical advice for the here and now. I'm sure he did work hard and exercise a lot of self-discipline to get to the point of catching that pass. The comment was offensive to active LDS Ute fans is all, their usual hypersinsitivity about this kind of stuff.

There run differential is +70. Among the teams in the playoffs that is 5th out of the 6 teams. So with that good offense comes a difficulty in preventing runs from scoring. The Cardinals don't suck, but they aren't the best team by a longshot. They are riding a hot streak right now.

Pujols isn't the best player in the game anymore. He is great, but there are players that outperformed him this year. Be glad you have Pujols though and that he didn't throw a ball when LaRussa put him in the field despite doctors orders that throwing the ball could lead to a career threatening injury.

Once they overcame some injuries (or at least were able to play with them) they started playing a lot better. Carpenter got a lot better as well. They started playing up to their potential, which is not just riding some hot streak. What team in the NL is a better team? Maybe the Phillies, but who else? The Brewers? No way. The Cardinals split the series with them in the regular season even with their early inconsistencies and injury problems. The Diamond Backs? I don't think so.

Were the Cardinals the most impressive team throughout the regular season? No. But they came together when it mattered and they are not playing above their ability, in my opinion.

This post makes it harder for me to rip on the Cardinals. It is helpful when a Cardinal fan agrees that LaRussa is overrated. I will say this much. This Cardinals team is infinitely more deserving of a World Series than the 2006 team. This team does have some talent and wouldn't be anywhere near the worst team to win the World Series in the wild card era.
