Here are my thoughts on the experience at the Delta Center last night.
It was a fun game and experience. It is definitely leaning into a little more counter culture-ish vibe for Utah. The jumbo tron shots up people with beers to have them chug is not something I've ever seen at a Jazz game, but it has been a long time since I have been to a Jazz game so maybe that has changed.
This is not a criticism because the team had to put things together really quickly, but there are some things that could really improve with the arena experience. It wasn't until the second power play of the night where my brother and I finally found where they were showing the time left on a power play. The location wasn't intuitive and was really quite small on the screen. The fans there don't yet get how to watch hockey. I mean, no one was pounding on the glass. It will come in time as people become more knowledgeable of the game.
Some of this will happen over time, but goal celebrations aren't great. Not consistent with the goal horn and they need an iconic post goal song. Again, it will come with time.
The team name right now sucks. If that is the long term branding, it will hold back the stadium experience.
The Delta Center still sucks for hockey. I think they are absolutely lying about the number of unobstructed view seats. I don't believe Ryan Smith that it is a long term solution. I don't know how technology is going to make it so there are actual good sight lines. I was in the lower bowl on the bench side in front of the zone. Despite being there, you had a pretty big blind spot along the boards.
As for the team, I don't think it is a good team. They aren't going to be bottom 5, but they are not a playoff team at all. It is a tough division with the Avs and Stars in it. The Predators and Jets are also clearly better teams than Utah. Cooley and Guenther are both good young talents. Blackhawks are absolutely a bottom 5 team. They will have 20 more points or so than last year, but it will still be that level for this team.
As for the Blackhawks, it is going to be a rough and boring season. The team made the choice to stash all the talent in Rockford and let them develop this year. It is mostly a bunch of lower tier veterans. Kurashev's play last night really surprised me. I thought that last year was just a function of playing with Bedard, but he put a lot of pressure on Utah last night.
