    • Geez, they did pretty well.

Baldwin is a bit of a headcase, but he's at least made some plays in the NFL.
Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I'd probably even trade Jenkins for Tebow.
So that's why Jenkins got so many snaps on Friday. So they could check out AJ PoS Jenkins? Why on earth did they pull the trigger on this after seeing him up close and personal get completely shut down?

I am absolutely shocked that the Niners FO pulled this off. Jenkins is utterly worthless. Baldwin hasn't exactly been productive but at least he produced something with the horrendously shitty QB play the past couple years in KC.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

        • Trent Dilfer said that the coaching staff was telling Baalke to do something with Leeroy Jenkins.

Jenkins has been an epic bust for the reasons I mentioned above. He couldn't get off the line of scrimmage, didn't give a shit and then he would fall down when the ball was coming to him. The coaches would have otherwise forced Baalke to cut his ass.

          • The Niners have to decide whether to put Lattimore on the PUP list or IR. From what Schefter is saying, it's probably the IR.

IIRC, only a certain number of players can be on the PUP list and when Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree are already there, then you don't have a lot of space left. Combine that with the depth they have at RB and it's probably the right move. Lattimore already showed he could come back and be effective after one serious knee injury and surgery, but the second injury was worse than the first. If they make sure he's right by training camp next year, then the team might really have something in Lattimore.

              • This AJ Jenkins story reminds me of when the Dolphins drafted Yatil Green. A few years earlier they reached for OJ Mcduffie and hit a homerun so they gambled on Green. In Greens defense he tore his acl the first day of camp in back to back seasons and lost his explosiveness. He finished his career with 18 receptions after a comeback attempt with the Raiders. AJ will be lucky to get 18.

Speaking of the Raiders, I wanted the Niners to go after Darrius Heyward-Bey after he was released from the Raiders. I was under no illusions that he's worthy of the top ten pick the Raiders spent on him, but the guy almost got 1000 yards in 2011. He got something like 600 yards last year. Looking at his last two years combined, it's not horrible production for a #2 guy. Unfortunately, the Niners FO drafted AJ Jenkins just last year and thought that he would fill that role as the burner to stretch the field opposite Anquan Boldin coming into this year.

It became painfully clear throughout training camp and the first couple games that Jenkins had made zero progress from last year. I read something somewhere that AJ Jenkins is the first 1st round receiver ever to not get a single reception his rookie year who also wasn't injured. I wish the Niners' management had figured this out before the free agent period started.

DHB was a top 10 pick that made 34 million in 4 seasons in Oakland. What does $34 million buy you? 140 receptions amd 2100 yards. Al Davis was an idiot, the Colts picked him up on a 1 year deal with a base salary of 1 million that could be worth up to 3 million. Like you said he is coming off the two most productive seasons of his career and he is still only 26. 600 yards and 5 tds is well worth hos current contract.

                    • I'm pretty sure Austin Collie is going to be cut -- if not today, then before the final roster is made out. The feeling is that he's not entirely back from his knee injury. But another part of it is that Quinton Patton looked pretty good in his first preseason game. Additionally, Jon Baldwin caught a couple passes and doesn't look like the dumpster fire that AJ POS Jenkins was,. If Baldwin gets snaps, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get around 500 yards this year. That leaves them with Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams, Marlon Moore, Quinton Patton and Jon Baldwin -- and the coaching staff probably feels like all these guys can produce to varying extents which negates the need to carrying a sixth WR that doesn't contribute on special teams. Boldin, Williams and Patton were always untouchable vis a vis Collie. Marlon Moore has practiced well and played well in the preseason and has made himself untouchable. Baldwin was a first round pick who suffered through horrendous QB play and then a new coaching staff that runs an offense wherein he doesn't fit very well. Baldwin is going to have a year to justify a roster spot for next year. Regardless, with Collie supposedly not exhibiting his old form, Baldwin is probably at least the 5th best WR option on this team right now.

                      • What teams do you think would take a look at Collie?

I was surprised the Pats didn't want him in camp. Their WR corps is pretty barren.

The Pats should take a look at Collie.

The thing about the Niners prior to a week ago -- they were looking down the barrel of having Anquan Boldin as their #1 and Kyle Williams as the second best receiver on the team and not much behind them. Sometimes there are preseason heroes of course, but Patton looks like a legit #2 and a guy they can get 700 yards out of this year. Williams figures naturally as a slot guy. On top of that Baldwin can actually get on the field and catch the ball, something that AJ Jenkins was never going to do.

The guy I really can't figure out is Marlon Moore. I think he was in Miami for a couple years and started out there as a UDFA. He eventually made the active roster and has a couple TDs. I didn't think much when they picked him up, but the coaches like him and he's started during the preseason and has been productive. On one hand, it scares me because he wasn't exactly lighting it up in Miami. But on the other hand the QB play in Miami has been dicey to say the least and sometimes something clicks with receivers after they've been in the league for 3 years or so.

My dream scenario is that a winning team, competent QB play, and Anquan Boldin rubs off on Baldwin. It would be a helluva thing to salvage that first round pick that was spent on AJ Jenkins if they can get Baldwin to turn into a #2 receiver.

They've still got another 21 left to go. When the 49ers traded AJ Jenkins for Jon Baldwin, that made Collie's situation pretty bleak, especially because they traded for a WR. Jenkins has above average measurables, so SF is inclined to give him more than a quick look. With Patton looking like he can play this year, it makes Collie making the cut a long shot, especially since he doesn't provide the Special Teams boost covering kicks or returning kicks (at least not that he has proven at the NFL level) like Hawkins or Osgood does. Which is sad, I really wanted to see Collie play in SF. Maybe he catches on in KC with Andy Reid.

It would nice to see Alex Smith make magic happen with Austin.
